I have sat across from Caribbean couples who, for the first time in their relationship, said out loud that they had once considered ending their life. And I have watched the person next to them go still with shock. Years together, and this was the first time they heard it.

That silence is not strength. It is what happens when we tell Caribbean people, directly or in comments sections, that this is not something people like them do.

So today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, I am asking something small and hard. Talk to that person in your life who always seems fine. The strong one. The one who never asks for help. Ask them anyway.

You might be the first person they tell.

If you are struggling right now, please reach out to someone you trust, or go to your nearest emergency room if you are in immediate danger.

She sat down and said: “He decided for both of us without ever considering my feelings and thoughts”. She felt betrayed, and even more so when he didn’t seem to understand why she felt that way.

Does this sound like betrayal to you? We aren’t talking about cheating or anything like that, just the fact that one partner did something without (seemingly) considering the other.

We see betrayal as something that means the trust was betrayed by adding another person. But the trust can be damaged by forgetting to bring the other person along. Making choices that definitely influence the other person, even if you think it won’t. In the Caribbean, being strong means handling things on your own. But strength CAN include your partner.

Betrayal in all its shapes and forms hurts. Let’s start talking about it. Cheating isn’t the only way!

Send this to your partner to start the conversation.

Found this gem on my Facebook memories today. 15 years ago I was walking into my first day as an intern psychologist, already cracking jokes about being blamed if anyone “went berserk” on my watch, mainly scared that I would mess it (and people) up.

Fifteen years later, here is what I know that I did not know then. Nobody actually goes “crazy” out of nowhere. There is always a reason underneath (usually one that started long before they came to me).

I am still doing the work, and still joking around (this time with my clients). Just with new grey hairs and a lot more compassion for the ones I sit with (and for myself).

Then vs now. Some things changed, and some things stayed exactly the same.

Every July 1st I think about freedom differently than most people expect.

Not just the history of it, though that matters deeply. I think about the smaller, quieter freedoms. The ones we still have to fight for in our own homes, with the people we love most.

Growing up between two cultures and a handful of ancestries taught me early that belonging isn’t guaranteed, it’s negotiated. And somewhere in that negotiation, a lot of us learn to shrink. To translate ourselves. To offer the version that’s easiest to accept rather than the one that’s true.

If you recognize that pattern in your relationship, the editing, the softening, the parts you hold back, you’re not broken. You’re carrying something old. And it can be unlearned.

Where are you still shrinking to be accepted? Tell me below, or just sit with the question today.

Save this for the next time you need the reminder. 🤎

A lot of couples assume the first real problem in their relationship was the first big fight, but it almost always started earlier than that. It started in the moment you first realised your partner thinks differently than you, wants different things, carries different fears.

That moment can feel like a small betrayal even when nothing was actually betrayed, because suddenly the person you thought you were building a life with has turned out to be a whole separate person with their own inner world that you do not have full access to.

This is normal and it is the work of every real long-term relationship. But for couples who never learned how to hold difference between them, it can feel like the floor falling out.

Share this with a partner or friend who is still working out what shifted in their relationship.

Some of the most loving couples I have ever worked with stopped fighting years ago, and not because the conflict was actually resolved. They stopped because one of them learned somewhere along the way that bringing things up only made the night worse, so eventually they just stopped bringing things up.

From the outside that looks like peace, but from the inside it feels like slowly disappearing inside your own relationship.

If this is where you are, you are not weak and you are not failing at communication. You are protecting yourself from something that did not feel safe. The work is not forcing yourself to speak, the work is rebuilding the kind of safety that makes speaking possible again.

Couples in my office have spent years fighting the same fight, and most of the time it looks like it is about dishes or how someone parks the car or who forgot to text back when they said they would. It is almost never actually about any of those things.

Underneath every fight that keeps repeating there is a quieter question that never quite gets asked out loud, something like do you see me, or do I still matter here, or am I safe to bring this up without it becoming a whole thing.

The fight is just the protector standing in front of the question.
