Not PCOS Anymore, Itโs Now PMOS! ๐งฉโจ
The condition we have known for years as "Polycystic O***y Syndrome" (PCOS), which closely impacts women's health and reproductive potential, has undergone a major name change in the medical community. We now refer to this syndrome as PMOS!
So, why was this change made, and what exactly does PMOS stand for? Letโs put the puzzle pieces together:
๐ What is PCOS? Why Was the Old Name Misleading?
The word "Polycystic" in the old name created the impression that there were multiple "cysts" on the ovaries. However, this condition actually stems from small, immature, and underdeveloped egg follicles, not real cysts. Furthermore, this syndrome is a broad condition that affects metabolism, hormones, and the entire bodyโnot just the ovaries.
๐ Why Did It Become PMOS?
The main purpose of this name change is to prevent the condition from being perceived solely as "ovarian cysts" and to more accurately reflect its metabolic and hormonal dimensions.
๐ฌ What Does PMOS Stand For?
The acronym PMOS has been updated as: Polymetabolic O***y Syndrome.
Poly-: Represents its multiple and widespread effects,
Metabolic: Represents its impact on insulin resistance, weight management, and hormonal imbalances,
O***y: Represents its effects on ovulation patterns and reproductive health.
๐คฐ What is Its Impact on IVF and the Journey to Motherhood?
