Your bones have a limited time in which to build mass. ⏳
Up until around the age of 30, you build what is known as Peak Bone Mass (PBM). This is your capital for the future. After the age of 30, the processes slow down, and your main goal becomes protecting what you’ve managed to build and slowing down the natural loss of bone density.
The good news? You can make a real difference. Here are the 5 building blocks that science recognises as key to a strong skeleton:
🏋️♀️ Appropriate exercise
Resistance training (weights) and impact training (e.g. gentle jumps or burpees) send a mechanical signal to your body. This gives cells called osteoblasts a clear task: to build up and strengthen the bone matrix.
🥚 More protein
Protein isn’t just for building muscle. Consuming 1.2–1.6 g per kg of body weight stimulates the release of hormones that support bone tissue (IGF-1) and helps your body absorb calcium from food more effectively.
☀️ Calcium + Vitamin D
Your skeleton is a storehouse of calcium. If you don’t get enough from your diet, your body ‘borrows’ it from your bones. An adequate supply of calcium, in an inseparable pairing with vitamin D, is absolutely essential for prevention.
🛌 Deep sleep (at least 7 hours!)
Sleep is a time for repair. The research is relentless – after just two severely disrupted nights, bone-degradation processes begin to outweigh bone-rebuilding processes. Look after your circadian rhythm.
🚭 Fewer stimulants
Ni****ne blocks calcium absorption, and excessive alcohol directly damages bone-forming cells. A clean body is a strong body.
