👉This study explored the association between in-hospital skin-to-skin care and neonatal white matter microstructure in frontal and limbic pathways that are linked to stress regulation and socio-emotional development, processes potentially influenced by affective touch during skin-to-skin care.
Conclusions:
🙌The mean duration per instance of skin-to-skin contact and the mean number of minutes of skin-to-skin per hospital day were associated with measures of white matter microstructure in children born very preterm.
These findings suggest that skin-to-skin contact may be neuroprotective. Future research should identify mechanisms of this effect, which may result from reductions in inflammatory responses or slow cellular aging, based on the direction of association. Future studies should further assess whether these early differences in brain microstructure translate to positive long-term cognitive, language, or socio-emotional outcomes and whether white matter microstructure may serve as a mediator between skin-to-skin care and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
