Today, we recognise 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 - an international awareness day dedicated to raising awareness about Multiple Sclerosis (MS), supporting those affected by the condition, and promoting earlier and more accurate diagnosis worldwide.

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic neurological condition affecting the brain and spinal cord, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres. This disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body and may lead to long-term disability if left untreated. This year’s global campaign focuses on the importance of timely diagnosis, improved access to neurological care, and better understanding of the challenges many patients face before receiving an MS diagnosis.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬
- Persistent fatigue
- Numbness or tingling in the limbs
- Muscle weakness or spasms
- Vision problems
- Balance and coordination difficulties
- Cognitive or memory problems
- Speech or swallowing difficulties

𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡
While MS cannot currently be prevented, maintaining a healthy lifestyle may support overall neurological health:
- Avoid smoking
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain adequate vitamin D levels
- Follow a balanced diet
- Manage stress and prioritise sleep

Maintain a healthy lifestyle, be aware of the common symptoms, and consult a Neurologist if you experience any of these symptoms.

As the seasons change in Cyprus, many people experience an increase in allergy-related symptoms.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to airborne substances such as pollen from trees, grasses and weeds. Seasonal allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to these otherwise harmless particles, triggering inflammation in the nose, eyes, throat and airways. Common symptoms include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, throat irritation, and fatigue.

𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬:
𝟏. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬
Check daily pollen forecasts and try to limit outdoor activities when levels are high, particularly during early morning and late afternoon when pollen counts tend to peak.
𝟐. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝
During high pollen periods, keep windows and doors shut, especially in bedrooms, to reduce indoor exposure. Consider ventilating your home at times when pollen levels are lower.
𝟑. 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Use air conditioning where available and consider air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce airborne allergens indoors. Don’t forget to regularly clean surfaces to prevent pollen accumulation.
𝟒. 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬
Limit time spent outdoors during high pollen hours and avoid activities such as mowing grass or gardening, which can increase exposure.
𝟓. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞
Shower, wash your hair, and change clothing after spending time outdoors, to remove pollen particles and prevent them from spreading indoors.
𝟔. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐄𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬
Wear sunglasses outdoors to reduce pollen contact with the eyes. In more severe conditions, a properly fitted mask (e.g. FFP2/KN95) may help reduce inhalation of allergens.
𝟕. 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
Use prescribed or pharmacist-recommended treatments such as antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays or eye drops. Individuals with asthma or more severe allergies should ensure their treatment plan is up to date.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞:
If symptoms are persistent, severe, or interfere with daily activities or sleep, consult with your doctor for proper assessment and management.
Taking early and consistent measures can significantly reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life.
