β˜€οΈ Protect Your Skin This Summer β˜€οΈ

A sunburn is more than just red skinβ€”it is a sign that your skin has been damaged by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Even a single severe sunburn can increase your risk of premature skin ageing and skin cancer.

The good news? Most sunburns are preventable.

How to protect yourself:
🧴 Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 2 hours, or more often after swimming or sweating.
πŸ‘’ Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin.
🌴 Seek shade, especially between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm when UV levels are strongest.
πŸ’§ Stay well hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the day.
πŸ‘Ά Take extra care with children, older adults, and people with fair or sensitive skin, who are at greater risk of sun damage.

If you do get sunburned:
βœ… Move out of the sun immediately.
βœ… Cool the affected skin with cool (not ice-cold) water or cool compresses.
βœ… Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser or aloe vera gel.
βœ… Drink plenty of fluids.
βœ… Avoid further sun exposure until your skin has healed.

🚨 Seek medical advice promptly if you develop extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, dizziness, confusion, signs of dehydration, or if a young child has a significant sunburn.

Enjoy the sunshine safelyβ€”protect your skin today for a healthier tomorrow.

🌑️ Heat Rash? Stay Cool, Stay Comfortable!

Heat rash (also known as prickly heat) is a common skin condition during hot and humid weather. It happens when sweat becomes trapped beneath the skin, causing small red bumps, itching, and irritation.

The good news? Most cases improve quickly with simple care.

Common symptoms include:
β€’ Small red bumps or tiny blisters
β€’ Itching or a prickling sensation
β€’ Redness and mild discomfort
β€’ Rash on the neck, chest, back, armpits, or skin folds

What you can do:
βœ… Move to a cooler environment.
πŸ‘• Wear loose, lightweight cotton clothing.
🚿 Keep the affected skin clean, cool, and dry.
πŸ’§ Stay well hydrated.
🚫 Avoid heavy creams or oils that can block sweat glands.

⚠️ Seek medical advice if:
β€’ The rash becomes increasingly painful, swollen, or spreads.
β€’ You notice pus or signs of infection.
β€’ You develop a fever or feel generally unwell.
β€’ The rash does not improve after a few days.

At Coral Bay Health Clinic, we can assess heat-related skin conditions, provide advice to relieve your symptoms, and ensure there isn't a more serious underlying problem.

β˜€οΈ Beat the Heat: Know the Signs of Sunstroke & Dehydration πŸ’§

Hot weather can quickly lead to dehydration or even heatstroke, especially in young children, older adults, and anyone spending long periods outdoors.

Warning signs include:
β€’ Excessive thirst
β€’ Headache or dizziness
β€’ Fatigue or weakness
β€’ Dry mouth or dark urine
β€’ Muscle cramps
β€’ Nausea or vomiting
β€’ Confusion or difficulty staying alert
β€’ Hot, flushed skin or a high body temperature

What you should do:
βœ… Move to a cool or shaded place.
βœ… Drink water or an oral rehydration solution if you are able to.
βœ… Loosen or remove excess clothing and cool the body with cool water or wet towels.
βœ… Avoid strenuous activity until fully recovered.

🚨 Seek urgent medical attention immediately if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a very high temperature, experiences seizures, or is unable to drink fluids. These may be signs of heatstroke, which is a medical emergency.

Prevention is always better than treatment:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated throughout the day.
🧒 Wear a hat and lightweight clothing.
πŸ•ΆοΈ Use sunscreen.
β˜€οΈ Avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hottest hours (approximately 11:00 am–4:00 pm).

🦟 Insect & Mosquito Bites? Here's What You Need to Know

Most insect and mosquito bites are harmless and improve within a few days. However, some bites can lead to allergic reactions, skin infections, or, in rare cases, more serious illness.

Common signs include:
β€’ Itching or irritation
β€’ Redness and swelling
β€’ A raised bump at the bite site
β€’ Mild pain or tenderness

What you can do:
βœ… Wash the area gently with soap and water.
🧊 Apply a cool compress to help reduce itching and swelling.
🧴 Use calamine lotion or an appropriate anti-itch cream if needed.
🚫 Avoid scratching, as this can increase the risk of infection.
πŸ’§ Stay well hydrated.

⚠️ Seek medical advice promptly if you develop:
β€’ Increasing redness, warmth or swelling around the bite
β€’ Fever or flu-like symptoms
β€’ Pus or signs of infection
β€’ Difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or widespread hives (seek emergency medical care immediately)
β€’ Symptoms that persist or continue to worsen

Whether it's a simple mosquito bite or a more concerning reaction, the team at Coral Bay Health Clinic is here to help with assessment, treatment, and advice to keep you feeling your best throughout the summer.
