Qi, Chi & Prana 🌿
In Chinese medicine, Qi (氣)—also written Chi—is traditionally understood as the vital energy that sustains life. It is associated with the processes that allow the body and mind to function, and is influenced by breathing, nutrition, rest, movement, and our environment.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi flows through the body along energetic pathways known as meridians. Practices such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, meditation, and Reiki are traditionally used to cultivate, balance, and support this energy.
A similar concept exists in Ayurveda and Hindu traditions, where Prana is described as the vital life force and is said to flow through pathways called nadis. While the traditions and terminology are different, both concepts place strong emphasis on cultivating vitality through breath, food, movement, lifestyle, and daily practices.
Ayurveda, in particular, places great importance on prevention, longevity, and maintaining balance. Daily routines, appropriate nutrition, physical activity, breathing practices, meditation, and traditional supplements are all considered ways of supporting vitality and wellbeing.
From a modern perspective, it is important to distinguish these traditional concepts from scientifically established physiology. Qi and Prana are not scientifically established as measurable substances or frequencies. However, many of the practices associated with cultivating them—such as conscious breathing, physical movement, meditation, nutritious food, adequate rest, and stress management—can have measurable effects on the body and nervous system.
Perhaps the most interesting meeting point between ancient wisdom and modern science is this: our wellbeing is deeply influenced by how we breathe, eat, move, rest, and interact with our environment. 🌱
