With deep sadness, we mourn the passing of Shigehide Akamine Sensei.

Born in Naha, Okinawa, on November 30, 1947, Akamine Sensei was a direct student of O-Sensei Shoshin Nagamine, the founder of Matsubayashi-Ryu.

In January 1972, at the age of 24, he left Okinawa and travelled to Argentina. What was originally planned as a two-year journey became his life’s work. For more than five decades, he taught Matsubayashi-Ryu and played a central role in spreading Okinawan karate throughout Argentina and South America. Through his teaching, many generations of karateka were able to receive and continue O-Sensei Nagamine’s legacy.

For me and for our dojo, this loss is deeply personal. I had the great honour of being his student. The karate we practise and teach today in Berlin comes from this same lineage.

The legacy that Akamine Sensei received in Okinawa, carried across the ocean and kept alive in South America is the legacy that we now try to preserve and pass on in our dojo in Berlin, Germany. It lives in the way we practise, the way we teach and the values we try to follow.

His teachings and his dedication to karate will continue through his students and through the generations that follow.

Thank you for everything, Sensei.

Last week was a special moment for Dojo Berlin.

For the first time, 8 students took part in the same exam session, setting a new record for our dojo in Berlin.

Congratulations to Eduardo, Hans, Virginia, Leonid, Philipp, Deniz, Stefan, and Nam. We are very happy and proud that everyone passed.

It was an intense day, full of nerves, effort, concentration, and many emotions. But what stayed with us the most was the feeling of pride in this group.

Dojo Berlin continues to grow, slowly and steadily, while keeping the technical quality and human spirit that we value so much.

Seeing students help and support each other reminds us why this dojo is becoming stronger every day.

We keep growing together.

This year’s Matsubayashi-ryu Gasshuku took place in Norway, at Jon Hålien Sensei’s dojo in Valdres, together with the celebration of the dojo’s 30th anniversary.

Representing our dojo in Berlin, Frank Noelte, 1st Dan, travelled to take part in the training and exchange.

I am very happy that we continue to build and maintain these connections between dojos, whether through gasshuku, seminars, or shared training experiences.

Thank you to Jon Hålien Sensei and everyone involved for keeping this spirit of Matsubayashi-ryu alive.
