1. Prepare and Secure the Landing Zone (LZ)

Ensure the landing zone is pre‑designated, obstacle‑free, and ideally 30×30 meters or larger for safe operations. [easa.europa.eu]
Keep the ground surface flat, firm, and free from dust, loose stones, debris, or objects that can become airborne due to rotor downwash. [easa.europa.eu]
Maintain good housekeeping and remove all loose items within 100 feet of the landing zone. [osha.gov]
Do not locate the LZ near high obstructions, overhead cables, or slopes greater than 15 degrees. [static.con...illips.com]
Turn off non‑essential lights and ensure no floodlight is shining toward the helicopter. [static.con...illips.com]

2. Control Personnel Access

Only authorized, trained personnel should be near the landing zone. All non‑essential people must be cleared out. [static.con...illips.com]
No person, object, or vehicle should be in the landing zone during helicopter approach. [easa.europa.eu]
Conduct a daily safety briefing between pilot and ground personnel before operations. [osha.gov]

3. Ensure Correct PPE for All Ground Crew

Mandatory PPE includes:

Helmet with chin strap
Eye protection / goggles
High‑visibility vest
Hearing protection
Gloves (preferably reflective)
[static.con...illips.com]

Avoid loose‑fitting clothing that can flap and get caught in rotor downwash. [osha.gov]

4. Communication & Positioning

Assign one trained Landing Zone Coordinator (LZC) with reliable communication (VHF/FM/GSM) to the pilot. [easa.europa.eu]
The signaling person should stand downwind, visible, with arms raised in a V‑shape to guide the pilot. [easa.europa.eu]
Maintain radio communication unless otherwise instructed. [easa.europa.eu]
Alert the pilot of any hazards (wires, antennas, other aircraft, drones). [easa.europa.eu]

5. During Helicopter Approach

Never approach the helicopter until the pilot or flight crew gives a clear signal. [static.con...illips.com]
Approach from the front, maintaining eye contact with the pilot, and stay in a crouched position to avoid rotor blade dip. [static.con...illips.com]
Protect eyes and ears from debris and noise created by downwash. [easa.europa.eu]

6. Loading & Unloading Protocols

Only assist when instructed by flight crew. Do not open or secure doors unless directed. [static.con...illips.com]
Maintain control of long equipment by carrying it parallel to the ground. [static.con...illips.com]
Ensure proper slinging of loads with taglines of safe length, avoiding being drawn up into rotors. [osha.gov]

7. Fire & Emergency Readiness

Keep appropriate fire extinguishers (e.g., dry chemical) ready near the LZ. [static.con...illips.com]
After take‑off, keep the LZ clear and maintain emergency readiness for at least 5 minutes in case the helicopter returns due to an emergency. [static.con...illips.com]

8. Safety During Rotors Turning

Wait until the skids or cable touch the ground to discharge static electricity before handling loads. [easa.europa.eu]
Do not approach until receiving explicit thumb‑up clearance from the pilot or mechanic. [easa.europa.eu]
