ases. The EASD Annual Meeting is one of the largest diabetes conferences in the world, attracting thousands of delegates each year. The scientific programme includes hundreds of talks, presentations and discussions on the latest results from basic and clinical diabetes research. EASD is also a leading player in postgraduate education having trained thousands of healthcare professionals through dedicated training courses and online education activities. Our award winning e-Learning platform, offers free access to courses developed with world-class experts in diabetes research and care. The Association is actively involved in producing and endorsing statements and guidelines translating the latest results from diabetes research into best practices in diabetes management. These statements and guidelines have proven to have significant visibility and substantial impact on health care, particularly when concerning statements on treatment and diagnostic criteria. By creating the Early Career Academy, EASD has increased its commitment to support, train, mentor, and create opportunities for scientists, clinicians, and students who are at an early or intermediate stage of their career. The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was founded by EASD in 2000 to stimulate diabetes research in Europe. EFSD offers support in all areas of diabetes research through a wide range of joint and stand-alone initiatives. Funding streams are available throughout the year and since inception, EFSD has committed over €120 million to diabetes research in Europe. EASD is also the publisher of Diabetologia, a major monthly international diabetes journal with an impact factor of 8.2 (2022). This one: "The Future of Diabetes Technology: Beyond Devices to Equity and Personalisation" brings together Anna Krook, Klemen Dovč, Pieter Gillard and Julia Mader to explore how diabetes technology is moving beyond devices: from CGM and automated insulin delivery to AI, personalisation and integrated health records.

The conversation also asks an important question: how do we ensure that these innovations are accessible to everyone?

🤔 Does lifestyle intervention really need to come first?

Many clinical guidelines require patients to complete a period of lifestyle intervention before starting obesity pharmacotherapy - but where does that rule actually come from?

In a new opinion piece in Metabologia, Luiz F. Viola et al. make the case that this requirement has never been prospectively tested. They point out that obesity drug trials show pharmacotherapy is the main driver of weight loss, and draw a parallel to bariatric surgery, where mandatory preoperative lifestyle intervals have already been abandoned.

A timely read for anyone involved in obesity care guidelines or treatment. 📖

Many clinical guidelines require a period of lifestyle intervention before initiating obesity management medications. No prospective trial has tested whether this sequence improves outcomes compared with concomitant initiation. The rule likely originated from the duration of behavioural intervention...

✋ Taking care of young adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may be facing a rather overlooked challenge: strikingly low physical activity.

🏃‍♀️ A new accelerometer-based analysis published in Metabologia found that, at age 20, people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes averaged an estimated only 16 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity per day, compared with 49 minutes among peers without diabetes. They also recorded roughly half as many daily steps.

⭐️ The study reinforces why 24-hour behaviours (movement, sedentary time and sleep) should be central to prevention and person-centred management, particularly for early-onset type 2 diabetes, first-author Jonathan Goldney from Leicester Diabetes Centre emphasises.

🧠 Meet Prof. John Dennis (University of Exeter), recipient of the EASD Rising Star Symposium & Rising Star Research Fellowship.

His project, “Individual-level heart failure risk stratification to inform precision SGLT2-inhibitor treatment,” focuses on identifying people with type 2 diabetes who are most likely to benefit from SGLT2 inhibitors for the prevention of heart failure and kidney disease.

The research has resulted in validated prediction models that use routine clinical information to estimate an individual’s likely benefit from SGLT2-inhibitor treatment. By providing personalised estimates of risk reduction, this work could help support more precise treatment decisions and identify those most likely to benefit.

🗣️ “The EFSD programme has helped progress my career as an independent diabetes researcher and lead precision medicine research that can make a real difference to people with type 2 diabetes.”- Reflecting on the programme, Prof. Dennis shares!
