If a tooth fragment is retained in the lower lip, that’s a foreign body injury and it’s pretty common after dental trauma or a fall. Here’s what matters and what to do 👇

Why this matters
• Infection risk: Tooth fragments can carry bacteria.
• Chronic swelling or pain: The body may react and form a granuloma.
• Scarring or nerve irritation: Especially in the lower lip.
• Delayed healing: The wound won’t fully settle until the fragment is out.

Common signs a fragment is still there
• Persistent lump or hard spot in the lip
• Tenderness, throbbing, or sharp pain
• Swelling that doesn’t go down
• Occasional pus or drainage
• Pain when moving the lip or eating

(Some people feel fine at first, then symptoms show weeks or months later.)

What you should do

Do not try to remove it yourself.
1. See a dentist, oral & maxillofacial surgeon, or ER clinician
2. They may order:
• Soft-tissue X-ray or CBCT
• Sometimes ultrasound if X-ray is unclear
3. Minor surgical removal is usually done under local anesthesia
• Quick procedure
• Often stitches dissolve on their own

After removal
• Antibiotics may be prescribed (not always)
• Mild swelling/bruising for a few days
• Rinse gently (salt water or prescribed mouth rinse)
• Avoid biting the lip while numb
