THERAPEUTIC TEACHING TIP: Interoceptive Awareness

Interoception is the skill of noticing and interpreting the internal signals of your body.

When students are experiencing health challenges or have lived through trauma, they may become disconnected from their body or caught in cycles of worry and rumination.

As Kundalini Yoga teachers, we can help students begin to reconnect with and listen to their own inner experience.

✨ Try this simple interoception practice in your class—or explore it yourself:

1️⃣ Take 3 slow breaths, noticing the movement of the breath.
2️⃣ Bring your attention to your heartbeat. Notice its rhythm, steadiness, or variation.
3️⃣ Notice your internal temperature. Is there warmth in some areas and coolness in others?
4️⃣ Expand your awareness to your belly. Notice fullness, emptiness, or movement with the breath.
5️⃣ Rest in this inner listening for 1–2 minutes.

You can introduce interoception between exercises in a kriya, after pranayama, or at the close of practice.

Why does this matter?

Developing the ability to notice and name inner states is an important step toward self-regulation—and can give students valuable information about what they need.

A Teaching Tip for Bringing Self-regulation into a Yoga Class 🌿

Self-regulation is an important skill we can cultivate in ourselves—and teach our students and clients to develop through their yoga practice.

Here’s a practical tip from Foundations of Kundalini Yoga Therapy: Principles and Practices with HariKirin Kaur, MD, C-IAYT:

Teaching Tip for Bringing Self-regulation into a Yoga Class

To bring self-regulation methods into a yoga class, start by integrating grounding techniques. This can be through guiding students into a grounding mudra before beginning a kriya, or giving a cue to notice their sensations after tuning in.

Here’s an example of a self-regulation grounding technique you’ll learn in the Foundations training. You may already be familiar with this one, as it is a mudra used in various meditations.

Self-Regulation Grounding Technique

Place your left palm over your heart center, your right palm rests on the back of your left hand.
Notice the sensation of the warmth of your hands and the sensation of the light pressure of the palms.
Remain in the mudra for 3 to 5 breaths.

What makes this technique a grounding mudra for self-regulation is that it is practiced NOT as part of a meditation or kriya, but is applied on its own, usually after an action — such as between exercises in a kriya, or before/after shivasana.

You may want to explore this yourself, the next time you practice a kriya, and the next time you teach.
