On e-scooters at 20 km/h - neurosurgeon and trauma surgeon appeal together: Protect your heads! Wear a helmet!
But at speeds of up to 20 km/h, a fall can lead to serious head injuries. Prof. Dr. Uwe Kehler, Chief Physician of Neurosurgery and Prof. Dr. Lars Gerhard Großterlinden, Chief Physician of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Spine Surgery at the Asklepios Clinic Altona in Hamburg, urgently warn of the risks and appeal not to use the e-scooters without a helmet.
Already 14-Jhrige can drive starting from coming month the new E-Scooter. Since these are permitted "only" up to a maximum speed of 20km/h, the legislator has prescribed an insurance cover, but no helmet obligation. "We already have many years of experience with cyclists who ride without a helmet and then come to our clinic with serious injuries," says the head physician of neurosurgery. "Typical head injuries such as craniocerebral trauma, cerebral hemorrhages, subdural or epidural hematomas or cerebral edema can be demonstrably prevented in part or even completely by wearing helmets". The consequences of such injuries range from headaches, concentration disorders, epileptic seizures, paralysis, speech disorders to the need for long-term care, coma vigil and death. "And indeed, children and adolescents are even more at risk than adults. They are less attentive and anticipatory and take more risks," warns Prof. Dr. Kehler.
A study from the USA recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms the high risk of head injuries when using e-scooters. Injuries were investigated in the Texas capital Austin between September and November 2018. Of the 190 injured e-scooter drivers identified there, 45 percent suffered head injuries. Virtually no driver wore a helmet. "As we know from our experience in other countries, e-scooters are simply not harmless despite all the driving fun," warns the Chief Physician of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Spine Surgery. For example, 70 percent of the E-scooter drivers involved in accidents in Austin suffered injuries to their upper limbs such as hands, wrists, arms and shoulders, while 55 percent suffered injuries to their lower limbs.
"I hope that what is now common practice among skiers will also become established among future e-scooters from the very beginning: Protect your head! Wear a helmet", Prof. Dr. Kehler therefore appeals urgently. "And the adults have a decisive role model function in this respect.
