On behalf of our whole team at the German Genealogy Collective and Beyond History, we want to say a heartfelt thank you.

To the German archivists, parish secretaries, civil registrars, and the many others who help us every single day: thank you. You answer our questions, track down records that seem impossible to find, and open the door to historic documents that would otherwise stay out of reach.

Your work is the reason so many families finally learn where they come from. Behind every breakthrough we celebrate, there is usually someone in an archive or registry office who made it possible.

We see you, we appreciate you, and we could not do this work without you. ๐Ÿ™

To everyone who safeguards our shared history:

1. Start with an alphabet chart. Kurrent and Sรผtterlin charts are free online. Print one
and keep it next to your screen.
2. Find an anchor word first. A place name, a month, a relationship term. Use it to orient
yourself in the rest of the entry.
3. Compare entries by the same scribe. The same letters will reappear. Patterns emerge
faster than you think.
4. Do not commit to a reading too early. If you are only eighty percent sure, write it down
as tentative and keep checking.
5. Ask for help. The genealogy community is generous, and a second pair of eyes can
crack something in seconds that has stumped you for an hour.

Save this post for the next time you hit a wall! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Quick question:

Most people use the terms interchangeably. They are actually two different scripts, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in German genealogy research.

Kurrent was the standard German handwriting style for centuries. Sรผtterlin came later, developed in the early 1900s as a simplified version that schoolchildren could learn more easily. Rounder, more uniform, a little more forgiving on the eyes.

If you have ever come across a child's school exercise book from the 1920s or 1930s, you are looking at Sรผtterlin. Those careful, deliberate letters were the result of hours of practice and a great deal of patience.

Learn one, and the other becomes much less scary.

Most German genealogical records were not typed. They were written by hand in ๐—ฎ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ž๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, and it looks almost nothing like the alphabet most of us grew up with.

Angular letters. Tight spacing. An "n" that looks like a "u." An "e" that practically vanishes. And every pastor, registrar, and village schoolteacher had their own personal version of it.

If you have ever opened a German church book and thought "I have absolutely no idea what I am looking at" - that is Kurrent. And you are not alone.

The good news? And once your eye adjusts, those pages start to open up.
