The IssueLet’s defend life in our seas!Hydrocarbon extraction does not just worsen the climate crisis. It drives up military spending that cripples our economy. It destroys tourism and fisheries. Crucially, it poses a direct threat to endangered and vulnerable species in the internationally recognized Hellenic Trench. We demand that Greece honor its signed treaties and cancel all hydrocarbon exploration and extraction programs in the region.A World Worth SavingOff our coasts—spanning from the Ionian Sea and southern Crete all the way to Rhodes—lies a magnificent underwater world. With deep-sea canyons plunging over 5 kilometers, the Hellenic Trench is the single most vital habitat for the endangered Mediterranean s***m whale. It is also a critical sanctuary where vulnerable Cuvier’s beaked whales live, feed, and breed. These deep waters shelter dolphin species, fin whales, sea turtles, Mediterranean monk seals, and many other protected marine animals.Global Recognition vs. Local InactionThis habitat holds global ecological value. Because of its rich diversity and abundance of cetaceans, the IUCN has designated it an IMMA (Important Marine Mammal Area). Furthermore, the ACCOBAMS agreement—ratified by the Greek parliament—mandates that the Hellenic Trench be declared a Marine Protected Area, urging Greek authorities to take action since 2007.Yet, the Greek government turns a blind eye. Despite urgent warnings from world-renowned scientists and environmental groups, officials are doing the exact opposite of what they promised:Dividing the Hellenic Trench into “blocks” and handing them over to oil companies.Allowing unregulated shipping traffic straight through sensitive habitats.Permitting heavy military exercises in the area. These activities are proven to drive marine mammals away, effectively signing a death warrant for these vulnerable populations.
