How soon can treatment begin?

It's one of the first questions our international patients ask — and we understand why. When it comes to your health, every day matters.

At Heidelberg University Hospital, we work to move quickly. As soon as you send us your medical documents, our specialists review your case and prepare an individual treatment plan and cost estimate. The exact timing depends on your diagnosis, the completeness of your documents, and whether a visa is required.

In urgent cases, we do everything we can to speed up the process.

How long will I stay at Heidelberg University Hospital?

It's one of the most common questions our international patients ask — and the answer is always individual.

At Heidelberg University Hospital, there is no standard length of stay. The duration of inpatient care is determined individually, based on your diagnosis, the treatment you need, and how your recovery progresses.

Whenever it's medically possible, we treat patients on an outpatient basis. That means you're only hospitalized when it's truly necessary, and the rest of the time you can stay comfortably nearby and come in for your appointments.

Your personal treatment plan, including the expected length of stay, is prepared by your medical team and outlined in your individual cost estimate, after our specialists review your medical documents.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are rare and heterogeneous tumors that can be difficult to treat, especially at advanced stages. Researchers at Heidelberg University Hospital and NCT Heidelberg - Nationales Centrum für Tumorerkrankungen Heidelberg have identified a promising approach by analyzing tumors at the molecular level.

The researchers studied 168 patients with advanced NENs using comprehensive DNA and RNA sequencing. This helped reveal hidden tumor vulnerabilities and identify possible treatment options.

Key findings: 85.7% of patients received personalized treatment recommendations based on their tumor genetics.

Nearly 60% of treated patients experienced clinical benefit, including tumor response or disease stabilization.

What this means: Tumors may become vulnerable to new treatment approaches, such as immunotherapy, after developing certain mutations.

Comprehensive molecular profiling could become an important tool for guiding cancer treatment in complex cases.

Conclusion: Analyzing a tumor’s DNA and RNA can help match patients with more effective, personalized therapies, even in rare and difficult-to-treat cancers.

📍 For patients with rare or complex cancers, Heidelberg University Hospital offers expert evaluation and personalized oncology approaches.

On May 31, World No To***co Day highlights the ongoing risks of ni****ne use — especially in light of new products such as e‑cigarettes and ni****ne pouches that are often marketed as safer alternatives. Yet there is no safe form of ni****ne consumption.

At Heidelberg University Hospital, and particularly at the Thoraxklinik — one of the largest specialist lung clinics in Europe — prevention, education, and support for quitting are central priorities. Through the long-standing “OhneKippe” initiative, the Thoraxklinik has been reaching thousands of young people every year for over 20 years, providing clear information about the real risks of smoking and sharing patient experiences.

The clinic also brings extensive clinical expertise: its certified Lung Cancer Center diagnoses and treats more than 1,000 new cases each year, using advanced approaches such as robotic surgery, immunotherapy, and precision oncology.

In addition, the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg is actively involved in public outreach, offering information campaigns, CO testing, and cessation support — for example through initiatives like “Rauchfrei im Mai.”

The message from Heidelberg University Hospital is clear: do not be misled by trends or marketing. Awareness, prevention, and early action are the most effective ways to protect health.

Why can the same diagnosis lead to different treatments?

Because no two patients are the same.

At Heidelberg University Hospital, treatment decisions are not made by a single doctor — they are made at the Tumor Board, where oncologists, surgeons, and specialists from related fields discuss each individual case together. The criteria for each therapy recommendation are based on the best possible effectiveness for the individual patient, combined with the fewest possible side effects and the best possible quality of life.

To make that decision, doctors need a wide range of information: tissue sample results, imaging data, laboratory findings, the patient's physical condition, symptoms, and individual expectations.

This is why two people with the same diagnosis receive different treatments — each one receives exactly what they need.

🔬 Heidelberg Researcher Receives Prestigious Paul Ehrlich Young Scientist Award for Brain Tumor Research — A Revolution in Neuro-Oncology 🌟

Dr. med., Dr. rer. nat. Varun Venkataramani, Research Associate at Heidelberg University Hospital, has uncovered a previously unknown mechanism in glioblastomas through his groundbreaking research.

Rather than simply draining nutrients from surrounding tissue, these tumors actively form synapses with healthy neurons. The findings are as fascinating as they are alarming:
Synaptic Coupling — The tumor establishes actual contact points with healthy nerve cells.

Signal Hijacking — It intercepts normal brain communication and exploits these impulses as direct growth commands.

Why does this matter? It finally explains why glioblastoma is so notoriously difficult to treat: the tumor literally integrates itself into the patient's neural network.

For this outstanding work, Dr. Venkataramani was awarded the prestigious 2026 Paul Ehrlich Early Career Award on March 14th — a well-deserved recognition of research that marks a major leap forward in neuro-oncology and a true beacon of hope for patients worldwide.

A powerful signal for the future of cancer medicine. Congratulations, Dr. Venkataramani! 👏
