A Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) devotes decades of study to the teaching method and art of teaching as developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. A strong, well-established personal practice is imperative, as is a serious study with senior Iyengar teachers. In order to become a CIYT, students must pass a vigorous standardized assessment. They must show proficiency in anatomy, asana, pranayama, yoga philosophy - and most significantly - they must demonstrate effective teaching skills, including the ability to keep students safe in class.

In order to maintain certification, CIYTs are expected to continue their zealous practice and study. This, in turn, deepens their teaching skills which are readily apparent to their students. CIYTs are serious practitioners, committed to both excellence in teaching and bringing the wondrous gift of yoga to others.

B.K.S. Iyengar has told his students that what they do in class is not, strictly speaking, yoga practice. This is because the “directing intelligence” is coming from the teacher. At home, on the other hand, the students’ own intelligence guides them and the progress that they make is their own. Consequently, the Iyengar method emphasizes the importance of a personal practice to strengthen one’s yogic journey and offers encouragement and support along the way.
