IR-ECT combines Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) with Electrochemotherapy (ECT) in a single treatment approach. The goal is to unite the strengths of both technologies and adapt treatment to the characteristics of each individual tumour.
IRE creates permanent pores in cancer cells, leading to cell death while preserving important surrounding structures such as nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. ECT uses temporary electroporation to improve the uptake of chemotherapy within tumour cells, increasing its local effect.
At VITUS Privatklinik, IR-ECT was developed as a way to address more complex tumour situations, particularly when treatment needs extend beyond the core of the lesion. The approach can be adapted to tumour size, location and aggressiveness.
As with any focal therapy, careful diagnostics and treatment planning are essential to determine whether IR-ECT is appropriate for a particular patient.
