SOMATIC EXPERIENCING: A FLOW THERAPY

In the previous post, trauma was reframed not as something stored, but as a loss of metastability – a system that has become rigid, over-weighted toward threat, and less able to flexibly integrate and segregate experience, as outlined in the recent work of Steven Kotler et al [1].

Long before this language emerged, Peter Levine described the same phenomenon clinically through two cornerstone concepts of his Somatic Experiencing (SE) model [2]:

1️⃣ SIBAM
2️⃣ Coupling Dynamics

SIBAM represents the gestalt of lived experience:

📌 Sensation – the body’s felt sense (interoceptive and exteroceptive)
📌 Image – impressions, memory, or visualisation
📌 Behaviour – incomplete or inhibited action tendencies
📌 Affect – emotion energy expressed through body, throat, and face
📌 Meaning – the contextual frame organising the experience

In a regulated system, these elements move together fluidly, continually coupling and uncoupling in response to context.

In trauma, this fluidity is lost.

SE describes this through coupling dynamics:

📌 Over-coupling – elements fuse rapidly and rigidly (e.g. sensation and meaning collapsing into immediate threat)

📌 Under-coupling – elements disconnect (e.g. sensation without meaning, affect without conscious access)

What neuroscience now describes as reduced metastability, SE has long worked with as distorted coupling within SIBAM.

🎯 The consequence is precise:

When SIBAM cannot reorganise fluidly, emotion energy cannot complete its movement. What should resolve becomes contained; what should integrate becomes internal threat.

This is where Somatic Tao extends the frame: fragmentation is more accurately understood as impeded emotology – the disruption of the body’s non-cognitive processing of emotion energy.

Impeded emotology drives adaptation for survival:

➡️ containment replaces processing
➡️ prediction replaces presence
➡️ stability replaces flow.

Over time, this drives allostatic load, increasing the likelihood of physiological and psychological disease.

Levine’s solution was deceptively simple: restore flow, gradually.

Through titration, SE introduces small, manageable exposures to previously unintegrated aspects of SIBAM, allowing the system to re-explore flexibility without triggering existing threat predictions. Not by forcing release, but by rebuilding capacity.

The key insight is this:

Trauma is not complexity requiring complexity. It is rigidity requiring restoration of flow. Levine recognised this over 50 years ago in shock trauma. Somatic Tao extends this further – from completion of incomplete defensive responses to completion of incomplete emotology underlying developmental trauma.

I’m personally a bit vary about the umbrella term somatic therapy because in my personal and clinical experience there is a huge difference between the possibilities and limitations between holistic therapeutic modalities like SE (Somatic Experiencing),
Narm, Sensimotor Psychology etc on the one hand and doing breathwork, 5 Rythm , Feldenkrais or whatever is
Sold under the umbrella.
I’m not speaking against the later- I’m practising the modalities myself- but expecting to heal trauma from it is
Another story.
Too many people jumping the somatic therapy and nervous system work bandwagon right now- having little to no education, making false promises…

Many different techniques fall under the umbrella of “somatic therapy,” which is gaining popularity.

…so true …

THE NON-DUALITY TRAP

Non-duality teaches you that the separate self doesn’t really exist.

It’s a mind-blowing realisation at first. It feels like the deepest truth you’ve ever encountered.

When that nondual truth is spoken so cleanly, so beautifully, so poetically, it can seem like there’s nothing more to do, nowhere else to look. You’ve found the ultimate reality.

There is no individual doer. No one here. Just awareness being aware of itself.

It can become very addictive.

But non-duality can destroy your life if you misunderstand it.

“No self” can come to mean no needs, no longing, no accountability. No one who has to show up, commit, be vulnerable, take responsibility, or do the hard work of healing. It becomes the perfect recipe for avoidance. For bypassing our humanity while pretending to have transcended it.

We know now that trauma lives in the body, below the level of awareness. You cannot “witness” your way out of wounds formed before you had language.

No satsang can reach it. No recognition of pure being can touch it.

The wound just sits there. Unhealed. Festering, while we talk of “awareness”.

And then the scandals. Teacher after teacher after teacher. Sleeping with students, cheating on spouses, abuse, power games, cover-ups.

This is what happens when non-dual “clarity” is severed from the messy, inconvenient reality of being human. When everything is reduced to awareness, and the imperfect human is basically dismissed.

No self.
No accountability.
No one to care who gets hurt.

The nervous system doesn’t heal in “satsang”. It heals in relationship, in commitment, in profound vulnerability, in showing up for your loved ones when every part of you wants to leave. In telling the truth.

*When non-duality becomes a fixed position, a final answer, a set of ideas to cling to, it stops being alive. It becomes a dogma, a way of actually avoiding life. A way of stepping out of responsibility while claiming to be beyond it. A way of refusing the human while speaking in the pristine language of the absolute.*

I feel so relieved to have stepped away from the non-duality framework. In keeping the realisations but leaving the cult behind, I found a freedom, joy and aliveness that had been missing all along.
