Hyon Gak Sunim: “If everyone applauds the teaching, I probably forgot to teach. Real Dharma should make at least one ego file a police report.”

See this video. Hyon Gak Sunim is traveling on the ICE (intercity express) 1094 from Regensburg to Munich to Heidelberg to deliver the talk at Buddhas Weg for their honoring of Buddhas Birthday.

While enjoying breakfast on the train prepared by the Zen Center Regensburg family. In our temple culture, Sunim practices — just as he teaches in the Zen Center — our mindful eating by pouring in some tea to clean the bowls and wash out and ingest any last remaining particles of food taken in a frenzied state of desire.

This is how we manage ALL donations at Zen Center Regensburg e.V..

Max left Germany to become a monk. Hyon Gak Sunim sent him to our root-temple, Dok Sah, where Hyon Gak Sunim trained and where his Teacher, Zen Master Seung Sahn trained, and where Ko B**g Sunim trained, and where Man Gong Sunim trained and rebuilt Korean Buddhism up from the ashes.

We thought there would be some protection for Max HJN from social media exposure while he entered the formation of becoming a monk, since Hyon Gak Sunim’s own path matured during the Digital Age, and brought him to such (temporary) ruined. No chance. They are already putting videos of our baby monk-boy on YouTube. The Dharma-ending age is not a concept, in case you were wondering.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

When teaching Korean Buddhism in the West, why say “Zen”? Why not the more (politically correct Korean) “Seon”, like the usual Chogye flunkies are always expected to do? Zen Master Seung Sahn was a real weirdo — he was free! As his student, Hyon Gak Sunim explains HERE, in a free post on his Patreon page:

The full video excerpt (only 10 minutes) of Hyon Gak Sunim's pilgrimage in 2008 to the site of his hero, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's, martyrdom at Flossenbürg Concentration Camp, and the silent retreat Sunim led there. This act of wordless homage was his first public teaching when he left Korea to lay down roots in the West.

Hyon Gak Sunim recently had a deep deep spiritual encounter with the contemplative Catholic Benedictine monks of the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore and the Abbey of Praglia, Italy. No bu****it touchy-feely interreligious show: true Communion among brothers of Silence, not depending on words or speech. (Though sometimes they appear!)

Some deeply personal reflections from Hyon Gak Sunim on his relationship to one of his early intellectual/spiritual heroes, the pastor/theologian/resistance non-fighter, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and how that led Sunim in 2008 to guide his first meditation retreat in Germany (after leaving Korea and fame) at the site of Bonhoeffer's martyrdom, the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp.

Part I of II significant posts on Sunim's Patreon blog.

Your membership there supports his health expenses for serving the Dharma in this darkening world.
