T3. The Backtrack- Foresight Nexus on History, Law, and Psychology for the Future of Maritime Systems
From ancient ships to future maritime technologies, progress has always depended on three powerful forces: time, regulation, and teamwork. The University of Trier and the World Maritime University are bringing these perspectives together through T3, an interdisciplinary initiative linking:
Time – exploring ancient seafaring, maritime history, and the lessons of Roman law through archaeological reconstructions and simulation-based research.
Techno-Regulation – examining how laws, policies, and governance frameworks shape emerging maritime and ocean technologies and influence future developments.
Teamwork – understanding how people collaborate in socio-technical work systems and how teams interact with emerging digital and technological actors.
Lessons from ancient seafaring practices, legal traditions, and human behavior provide critical insights for addressing emerging challenges in maritime and ocean development. As technological innovation accelerates, cross-disciplinary collaboration becomes essential for shaping resilient and sustainable maritime futures.
Prof. Dr. Christoph Schäfer, Prof. Dr. Thomas Ellwart (both Trier), and Prof. Dr. Tafsir Matin Johansson (Malmö) are launching T3 as a regular platform for exchange between researchers and students from both universities. The initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and contribute to the sustainable, human-centered, and productive development of maritime and marine systems.
