INNOVATION IN SIMULATION-BASED CATHETER TRAINING
We are excited to share a new milestone in our simulation program at the Interdisciplinary Training and Simulation Center (INTUS), University Hospital Würzburg: For the first time, goal-directed cath lab table movement can be realistically simulated outside the real cath lab, thereby avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure during training.
TURNING THE IDEA INTO REALITY
Medical engineering student Janek Rau, supported by Nils Jacobson (Mentice), equipped a floating, cath-lab-style table from PROTEC X-ray Systems GmbH with high-precision position sensors from WayCon Positionsmesstechnik and seamlessly integrated the setup into the Mentice simulation environment.
TRAINING BENEFIT
This innovation enables trainees to practice controlled table steering and learn how to keep the heart and other anatomical structures precisely centered in the fluoroscopic field — a skill previously impossible to train without being in the cath lab, yet essential for reducing radiation exposure in interventional cardiology.
OUTLOOK
We hope this functionality will soon become widely available, further enhancing the quality and efficiency of catheter training.
