How does medication use affect women’s mental health during pregnancy and after childbirth? And how has research in women’s health evolved over time?

Xiaoqin Liu, Senior Researcher at Aarhus University’s Department of Public Health, investigates the use of psychiatric medication during pregnancy and its potential effects on both parents and children. Her research contributes to a better understanding of treatment safety and helps inform healthcare decisions during a particularly important stage of life.

At our event, Xiaoqin will share insights from her research and reflect on how the field of women’s health has changed over time, including the progress made and the challenges that remain. 🔬

We’re excited to welcome Anne Sophie Callesen to Mind the Gap: Women’s Health!

With a background in political science and experience as a former Member of the Danish Parliament, Anne Sophie has made women’s health a key focus of her work. As co-founder of the Alliance for Women’s Health (Alliancen for Kvinders Sundhed), she works to advance research into women’s health and bring greater attention to the challenges women face in healthcare.

Women’s health is not just a scientific issue — it is also a political priority. More research is essential, but so is ensuring that existing knowledge leads to better diagnosis, treatment and care.

💬 At Mind the Gap, Anne Sophie will bring a political perspective to the discussion, exploring how political priorities and decisions can help drive progress in women’s health.

Mind the gap: Women's health

Why are we talking about Women's health?

For decades, medical research has often treated the male body as the default. Women have been underrepresented in many areas of medical research, and s*x differences have not always been adequately considered in the development of treatments and healthcare solutions.

So why does that matter?
🧬 Because biology matters. Sex-related biological differences can influence how diseases develop, how symptoms appear, and how people respond to medication. When these differences are overlooked, research findings and treatments may not fully reflect women’s needs.

🔬 Because research shapes healthcare. The evidence we build today influences the medicines, diagnostics and treatments available tomorrow. If women are not adequately represented in research, important gaps in our understanding can remain.

💰 Because investment shapes innovation. Women’s health has historically received limited attention and investment in several important areas, leaving unmet medical needs and opportunities for innovation.

🏛️ Because change requires more than research alone. Progress depends on researchers, companies, investors and policymakers working together to turn knowledge into better healthcare solutions.

Women’s health is not a niche topic. It is an essential part of building a healthcare system that works for everyone.

That is why we are hosting Mind the Gap: Women’s Health on November 25. We want to raise awareness of the historical gaps in women’s health research, highlight how these gaps have shaped healthcare today, and explore how researchers, industry and policymakers are working to drive change.
