Childbirth should be a moment of joy. Yet in Uganda, it too often becomes a moment of fear, uncertainty, and loss. Every day, nine women lose their lives to pregnancy-related complications, while many others survive with severe morbidities. Among the most devastating—yet entirely preventable—childbirth injuries is obstetric fistula, which often leaves women facing chronic physical and psychological trauma, including incontinence, infections, permanent infertility, and, in some cases, extreme social isolation because of stigma.

To mark last years , Ugandan stakeholders marched through Lira City to raise awareness and renew commitment—a powerful reminder that change is both urgent and possible.

Thanks to generous support from and , and partners are strengthening national efforts to prevent and treat obstetric fistula in Uganda. This partnership reminds us that together, we can restore dignity and health to women and girls.

Today on Human Rights Day, the of Activism against Gender-Based Violence come to a close. This year, and Nordics provided a crucial platform for essential dialogue, underscoring the critical importance of women’s empowerment and amplifying their voices in the fight against all forms of gender-based violence ( ).

The powerful exhibition, created by artist and co-founder and curator .stunkel, was hosted at , providing a space for reflection, understanding and motivation for action to address the numerous challenges women and girls continue to face worldwide. Art serves as an important medium that can be used to transform challenging topics into tools for discussion and change.

Together, we celebrated and inspired social change, advocating for gender equality and bodily autonomy.  Facilitating these spaces is not only crucial for change, but emphasises the importance of collaboration and strong partnerships.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants for their active involvement and engagement. Every individual bears a responsibility in advocating for human rights, championing gender equality, and ensuring that bodily autonomy becomes a universal reality for all.

Gender equality matters to everyone, everywhere. Yet, gender disparities are deeply rooted in our societies.

🟠 In 2023, 612 million women and girls lived within 50km of armed conflict. Nearly 1 in 10 women remain stranded in extreme poverty. 113 countries have never had a woman Head of State. Around 736 million women have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives. Every day, 30,000+ girls are forced into marriage worldwide. All the while, recent crises are pushing back against hard-won rights.
