The photo is from January 2018, a few years after I started reading Yalom, during my college years. In March 2018, I read from another of his books, "The Gift of Psychotherapy", to a group of students, when I was teaching at the University of Bucharest.
Yalom was one of the first and few authors who spoke my language, at the beginning of my career as a young psychotherapist, around 2012. In 2020, I stayed up until 3 am to attend a seminar taught by him, just to see him as close as possible to the flesh and blood. I cried then.
I am writing all this in the context in which yesterday I found out that one of his sons, Victor Yalom, a psychotherapist and the founder of my favorite psychotherapy magazine - Psychotherapy networker, died by su***de. Condolences to the family, it is absolutely tragic.
The shock I had upon reading this news, both as a psychotherapist and as a parent, was followed by the thought: "If Yalom's son leaves this world like this, being a psychotherapist, what will become of the rest of us?". This is the voice of the stigma of this profession, a stigma that a part of me has also taken on and to which, especially in vulnerable moments, other parts of me react with: shame, guilt, imposture, criticism, doubt, inadequacy.
Somehow, a part of society expects us, psychotherapists, to have all the problems solved, solutions for any difficulty of a psycho-emotional nature, permanent calm, supernatural abilities of emotional regulation.
Sometimes, the voice of society says, among other things:
"You are a psychotherapist, so:
- you have to sacrifice yourself for the people who open their hearts to you ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you are not permanently available for the people you work with?")
- the profession is above your personal life ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you do not dedicate your life to vulnerable people, from various points of view?")
- you are not allowed to say "no" ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you cannot carry many burdens?")
- you are not allowed to feel intense emotions ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you get angry? If you laugh out loud on the street? If you sob while driving? If you scream in pain when you lose someone?")
- you are not allowed to have a psychiatric diagnosis ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you take medication? If you have depression? Anxiety? Personality disorder? Autism?"
- you are not allowed to have a personal life ("what kind of psychotherapist are you if you go to parties? If you wear miniskirts? If you have cosmetic surgery? If you have been married 3 times? If you don't have children?")....
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SUFFER: "what kind of psychotherapist are you if you yourself suffer? You don't practice what you preach?"
The truth is that we are not immune to suffering, not even close. And we have the right to ask for help when we can't anymore, to stop when it's too much, to set limits when we are in danger, to feel, to make mistakes, to be sensitive, vulnerable and overwhelmed. We have the right to get sick, to fall, to not know what to do next and to withdraw. Not to give explanations and to cry in a pillow, having insomnia.
All this does not make us less capable of being present with our clients or less "professional". On the contrary, these are the experiences that differentiate us from all-knowing and perfect robots, they are the experiences that allow us to understand more deeply the people in front of us and to choose to be with them in (perhaps) the most vulnerable and overwhelming moments of their lives.
Have a safe journey, Mr. Victor Yalom. Thank you for everything.

Dacă râzi in hohote pe stradă?
Drum lin, domnule Victor Yalom. Vă mulțumim pentru tot.
