Three somatic tools I come back to again and again, and teach to every single one of my 1:1 clients.

Orientating - takes as little as sixty seconds and works immediately.

The Physiological Sigh you can do in the car before a difficult call.

Fascial Shaking looks strange (it’s like bouncing on a mini trampoline with your feet on the ground) and immediately takes you into a different state - more present, more at ease and more spacious.

None of them require you to sit still, meditate, or overhaul your schedule. Just five minutes and a willingness to try.

AND (this part is important) - you learn WHEN and WHY each of these works best for YOUR body.

These are three of the 24 practices in the Somatic Stress Toolkit.
(Available here https://coach.fionalsmith.one/somaticstresstoolkit).

Which one will you try first? 🌿

This is something I come back to again and again in my work:
You can’t think or plan your way out of a Nervous System stuck in survival.

Not because you're not clever enough or self-aware enough. Because around 80% of the information travelling between your body and your brain moves upward - from body to brain - not the other way around.

Which means what you analyse, reframe, and understand has far less influence on your stress response than what you do with your body.

This is why you can understand all the reasons you feel anxious and still wake at 4am with your heart beating out of your chest in a cold sweat*.

It's not a failure of insight.
It's physiology.

So our physiology - the body - needs to be included in the solution.
That's what somatic tools do.

They work at the level of the Nervous System, which governs our stress response.

And as little as five minutes is genuinely enough to begin to shift the patterns and regulate our system.

Sending love, Fiona x

*this becomes very common in perimenopause, when our stress response is also linked to the drop in hormones. The perfect storm.

Here's something worth knowing about the things most of us reach for when we're overwhelmed.

The glass of wine works by numbing.
The scrolling works by distraction.

Even exercise - as genuinely helpful as it is - mostly burns off the surface chemistry of stress without reaching the underlying pattern in the Nervous System.

Using these distractions - for a little peace or a quick dopamine boost isn’t some kind of character flaw. These things offer temporary relief, and temporary relief is real.

But they don't complete the stress cycle.
They don't tell the Nervous System it's safe to settle or switch off or stop producing or achieving.

Somatic tools work differently. They speak to the Nervous System directly - through the body; through breath, movement and sensation.

And they bring our awareness to the body when we experience the calm that doesn’t come from another glass of Sauvignon; to the experience of agency and ‘I can do this’ or to the feeling of safety in deep rest.

When we work somatically, we don’t need to talk about the past or sit still when sitting still makes you more anxious.

It can take as little as 2-5 minutes to create change - more stillness, more space, more ease. And you can use these tools in the car, in the park, in the loo at work and some of them are even fine to use at your desk right in the middle of the office!

Five minutes.
That's genuinely it.
And practice builds your toolkit and rewires your Nervous System.

One thing worth trying this week, as we shift into Spring
A Glimmer Walk.

Not a fitness walk, not a "make the most of the weather" walk. A walk where the only intention is to notice what catches your attention in a good way.

The particular quality of the light right now. The way everything smells different in the Spring. A garden that's got completely carried away with itself. Someone's cat basking on a wall in the sun.

These small moments of ease and pleasure - glimmers - are not trivial or a ‘nice to have’.

They are important information for your Nervous System. Evidence that the world contains safety and small good things alongside everything else. Each one you consciously notice becomes a resource your body can draw on - a memory of ease it can return to when things get loud again.

Notice - what you see, what you smell, the small movements as you respond to pleasure, the shifts in your breath. The sensation in your belly, chest… under your feet; in your face.

This week: one Glimmer Walk. Ten minutes is all it takes.
Notice what you notice. It’s genuinely that simple.

Sending love,
Fiona x

Why your body feels different as the seasons change - it's not all just in your head.
As daylight shifts, your window of tolerance widens. You might feel more irritation, more reactivity and a lower immune response.

Your Nervous System isn't broken - it's coming out of freeze.
And now you feel what’s here.

Simple somatic practices allow your system to re-orientate, feel safer, soften and regulate.

More on that this week. 🌿

Perimenopause can be exhausting.

You're not just tired, you're wired. And plagued by confusing symptoms.
Emotionally on a rollercoaster.

But sleep - when you can get it - doesn’t feel restorative.
Time off is still busy.
Even practices that once helped don’t land in the same way.

That’s because perimenopause isn’t just hormonal; it’s neurological.

As oestrogen becomes more unpredictable, the Nervous System becomes more sensitive; old stress patterns surface more easily and our buffer gets thinner. What used to stay held in the background starts to show up in our body, mood, sleep and digestion.

This is why my new sharing circle and programme, Reconnect, includes the Rest and Restore Protocol™, developed by Unyte, in collaboration with Stephen Porges.

RRP isn’t meditation or relaxation; it’s a listening-based therapy protocol that supports the Autonomic Nervous System to settle into a genuine parasympathetic state – often for the first time in years.

Regulating the nervous system and getting deep rest isn’t a luxury in perimenopause; it’s ESSENTIAL.

If your body has been begging you for support, comment ME for the programme details. We start 25 Feb. ♥️

Reconnect is a 6-week guided online Sharing Circle for women in perimenopause who are exhausted by the symptoms and confusion and mental and emotional upheaval and want to DO something that helps them feel better and more in control.

This isn't just another programme with lots of information (though you will learn more about what's happening to your body and brain and what it needs right now) - this integrates Rest and Restore Protocol™ which is a clinical-grade listening therapy designed by Stephen Porges. Based in polyvagal theory, the adapted music works with the Autonomic Nervous System (basically, the fight-flight response) to bring homeostasis - balance - back to the system.

Meaning less symptoms, less inflammation, less fog and MORE space, better rest, more balance and a way to getting back to feeling more like YOU.

We don't need to DO more in perimenopause - we need (sometimes desperately) to learn how to REST and to understand what our body and mind need during this time of change.

I love what Alexandra Pope (The Red School) says about this time in our lives - that perimenopause 'asks us to stop giving our life force away and reclaim it for ourselves'. Yes!

The group is limited to 10 women so everyone is held and has space. Comment 'ME' for more info or send me a message. ❤

The midlife journey...

The reality is that supporting a loved one with dementia is hard, and it's even harder when you're not there next door to pop in and take care of them or check up, or have a cup of tea or take them somewhere they want to go.

My dad has been told this week that he's no longer able to drive and driving has been his hobby and passion for over 30 years. He's probably been driving for about 70, so this is a massive part of his identity that he's saying goodbye to. And navigating this alongside him is really challenging because he's no longer able to see the big picture and doesn't want, of course, to accept reality.

So this is the message that my body needs to hear today. ♥️

Why are we still reducing menopause to HRT or not?

What if the real question is how to support the body through a complex, intelligent transition – rather than rushing to fix symptoms?

💥Understanding your woman's body and your Nervous System, going through menopause.

💥Real support, not one stop solutions.

This is what we'll be exploring in my class on Friday.

Perimenopause - from Anxiety to Capacity

Literally every day, I see posts online from distressed women going through perimenopause and experiencing symptoms that are confusing, debilitating and exhausting! I am in groups where there are literally hundreds of thousands of women having a negative experience that is largely unsupported or misunderstood by their doctor and families.

I started my research into perimenopause a decade ago, when I started to wake up with anxiety and heart palpitations - I was healthy, fit, in my mid 40s and had NO idea what was happening.
My (older, female) doctor was incredibly unhelpful and basically told me that she wasn't going to give me antidepressants (😲😳 - I hadn't asked for them!) and that only women without a purpose had symptoms in perimenopause. Seriously??
But I'd only recently moved to Denmark and didn't really know who else to ask for support.

So I got curious and I learned, and experimented, and used what I already knew, took courses and also took a 3-year education to certify as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner!

I now teach others from both my experience in perimenopause, and through my experience as a Nervous System expert.

Women deserve and need meaningful support and education on WHAT is happening and WHY and HOW to find a way forward out of the mess and 'hot & uncomfortable' experience so many are having.

I’m running a free live masterclass on 30 January at 12.00 CET for anyone navigating perimenopause and feeling a bit… undone by it all.

Anxiety that comes out of nowhere.
Brain fog.
Exhaustion.
Physical aches and pain
Hot flashes, tremors, smells, skin issues....
Feeling unlike yourself and wondering what on earth is going on.

This isn’t about fixing or pushing through. It’s about understanding what your body and nervous system need now – and why doing more can make things worse.

If perimenopause has felt jarring, confusing, or overwhelming, this will help you make sense of it and find a steadier way forward.

This is NOT a quick-fix solution and it's not a medical prescription.

👉Register to come live on Friday 30 January, 12.00CET.
👉Replay is ONLY available to those who have registered.
