We are pleased to let you know that our following review has been featured in the January edition of the Cochrane Library app:
'Melatonin for preoperative and postoperative anxiety in adults'
https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD009861.pub3

Melatonin was found to be effective at reducing anxiety before surgery, when compared to placebo. Melatonin was not found to be as effective against anxiety after surgery. It is reasonable to believe that the effect of melatonin on anxiety before surgery was similar to benzodiazepine medications, which are associated with more adverse risks than melatonin.

You can find more information about the app, and download it for your mobile device, from https://www.cochrane.org/news/cochrane-library-app. All content in the app is free and issues are published monthly.

Chest Ultrasound examination performed by non-radiologist emergency physicians is superior to Chest X-Ray for more timely diagnosis and treatment, which can reduce complications and improve outcomes.

Listen to this podcast of our review ”Chest ultrasonography versus supine chest radiography for diagnosis of pneumothorax in trauma patients in the emergency department”

Alongside the many thousands of Cochrane Reviews of the effects of interventions, our reviews of diagnostic test accuracy, or DTA, provide evidence to help clinicians choose between different techniques for diagnosing a health problem. In July 2020, we published the new DTA review on ultrasound vers...

Some researchers are tempted to use creative (but still incorrect) language to make their so-called 'negative' results more interesting. Here is a list of rubbish.
This kind of language is not recommended (but fun to read!)!

What to do if your p-value is just over the arbitrary threshold for ‘significance’ of p=0.05? You don’t need to play the significance testing game – there are better methods…

Updated review!
The conclusions and the certainty of evidence have changed for one outcome. There is now high certainty evidence for a reduction in acute confusional state with the use of peripheral nerve blocks:

Our new Rapid Review on ‘Oxygen targets in the intensive care unit during mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory distress syndrome’ (including ARDS secondary to COVID-19 or other viruses) is now published!

The key message is:
🗣️1 included study, very low certainty evidence. Further well-conducted studies needed❗️

We have taken a unique approach to getting evidence into practice by asking two senior anaesthetic doctors with a clinical background to volunteer to become “dissemination fellows” buff.ly/3gXUiec Find out more about our successes and lessons.

The Cochrane Anaesthesia Review Group (CARG) strongly believes that research does not finish when a paper is published and that without an audience engaging with a review then this amounts to research waste. Getting evidence into practice must therefore be a key aim - not only by disseminating revie...
