The forest floor offers our horses a diverse menu of edible plants and herbs. Some, such as wild garlic, wild thyme, and betony, have natural medicinal properties that can support health. Others, like wild strawberry, are a simple, delicious, and packed with nutrients treat.

From vitamin-rich leaves to aromatic herbs, these plants can be a wonderful supplement to your horse's diet and enrichment exercises.

As always, horse owners, be mindful of what your horses are eating, as not all parts of every plant may be equally safe.

Edible plants for horses in the forest 🌳💚
Part 2

Forest shrubs offer our horses a delightful variety of natural snacks. Many horses particularly enjoy dog rose berries (rosa canina), which are packed with vitamin C to support their immune health.

Junipers berries have mild diuretic properties and were traditionally used to support urinary issues in horses. And unlike grass, many shrubs provide year-round forage, offering vital nutrients.

It's important to remember that not all parts of a shrub are equally suitable for consumption. Keeping a watchful eye on your horse's browsing helps ensure they enjoy only the safest options.

Edible plants for horses in the forest 💚🌳🐴
Part 1

European forests offer our equine friends a beautiful variety of safe, edible trees and plants. This natural diversity can provide valuable nutrition and enrichment for horses who enjoy browsing!

It's good to remember that not all parts of a plant are equally safe. While some leaves may be fine to eat, some fruits, roots, or bark might not be. For this reason, it's wise to supervise your horse when they're exploring forest grazing.

Just like us, horses have their own tastes and sensitivities. One horse might love a particular plant, while another might not be interested. And even with plants that are generally safe, it's always good practice to watch for any unusual reactions.

The forest can be a wonderful addition to your horse's diet when approached with care. 💚

Part 2 : edible wildflowers for horses 🐴🌼

While grasses form the foundation of a horse's diet, wildflowers can provide valuable supplementary nutrition and natural health benefits. Beyond common favourites like dandelion and clover, these wildflowers are safe for horses to graze in pastures:

- Oxeye Daisy, leucanthemum vulgare
- Red Campion, silene dioica
- Forget-me-not, myosotis spp.
- Wild Rose petals, rosa spp.
- Chamomile, matricaria chamomilla
- Calendula, calendula officinalis
- Elderflowers, sambucus nigra
- Lavender, lavandula spp.

Remember to always confirm plant identification, as some have toxic lookalikes. And introduce new forage gradually to monitor for sensitivities 🤍

Which wildflowers do your horse enjoy? Let me know in the comments! 🐎

Welcome to this series on edible plants for horses! 🌱

In our first post, we're exploring the common grasses, shrubs, and trees you can find in European pastures. Horses naturally love to graze on these plants, and many of them are not only safe but also packed with nutrients that support their health.

Learning how to identify these plants is a valuable skill for any horse owner. It allows you to better understand your horses' diet, observe what they prefer to eat in the pasture, and ensure they are getting balanced and natural intake.

Stay tuned for part 2, where we'll dive into even more edible plants !

Love and horses 🐎❤️
