I love the data that wearables can provide but I’m seeing a concerning trend in the folks I work with (60+). This data (particularly HR) can create a lot of fear around higher intensity exercise. People constantly looking at their watch to make sure they don’t go over a certain heart rate because they perceived danger.

Now I know there are a lot of athletes that are intentionally training to be in certain heart rate zones, I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the person that’s new to exercise that doesn’t know what it’s like to achieve high intensity.

Yes, there are situations where we do want to approach higher heart rates with caution, but those situations are not the majority.

And don’t get me started on these new AI programs that are giving training recommendations based on wearable data. 😂

We shouldn’t feel responsible for something we cannot control. We can only influence.

Feeling a lot of gratitude after this weekend at Sampler.

🙏Grateful for this team that continues to challenge me and our profession. This group of humans continues elevated anything they touch.

🙏Grateful for who are willing to go into the pain cave with me and bike Lake Tahoe.

🙏Grateful to be able to visit my favorite park bench I slept on over 15 years ago because & I couldn’t afford a hotel room on our way back to KY.

Life is pretty wild.

Reducing range of motion is a great way to apply load in the presence of pain or a limitation.

Here are some things to think about when reducing ROM:

1. HEIGHT of the surface
The surface should be as high as necessary BUT as LOW as possible. There’s a time & place that we’re specifically looking at working a certain ROM, but with many older adults we’re encouraging as full ROM as possible because that relays to function. Ie) full squat so they can use low chairs, full deadlift so they can pick something off the ground. Appropriate height will be a constant assessment so it’s nice to be able to incrementally lower that surface to increase the ROM of the movement.

3. POSITION of the surface
If you’re doing elevated deadlifts, cleans, snatches…position the surface to make it easy for your patient to do what you want them to do. In this video, the client is caddy corner (or kitty corner for some of you crazy people) so she keeps the weight as close to her center of mass as possible. If she was turned around and on a straight edge of the box, she would have to put the weight down a little further away which would be less efficient.

3. LOAD
The reduced ROM will often allow you to go HEAVIER. And in , we want to take any opportunity we can to provide that stimulus. So adjust weight & make sure you’re achieving an appropriate intensity.

What am I missing? Drop your thoughts in the comments.

“How are you going to make a class appropriate for everybody in the class?”

1. Making sure the RIGHT person gets into your older adult fitness classes is imperative.

2. Once they’re in, program the class with those prereqs in mind.

3. Then, have options ready to keep people moving!

There’s nothing to gain from shaming folks trying to move in whatever capacity.

Some of the StrongerLife - Fitness for 55+ team are on our way down to the DR for the StrongerLife Adventure Retreat where we'll be joined by 20 StrongerLife Members! StrongerLifeHQ.com/adventure

Why in the world are we doing this retreat? We're just a "gym" right?

We are a gym...but as our members know we are so much more.

The SL team works our tails off to give our members the best training available for folks over 55 so they can lead a Stronger AND Better Life.

This retreat is the full expression of that. It's a way for people to put that Stronger Life on display. It's a way to reap the rewards from all the hard work in the gym so you have the ABILITY to take that trip...to try that adventurous activity...to take that chance.

It's a beautiful thing to experience and even a cooler thing to witness.

Gonna be a WILD week! Highlights to come!🎥🎥🎥
