3 years ago today I was in the Dominican Republic volunteering with an amazing non profit, The Global Clinic. We provided over 700 acupuncture treatments in just 5 days. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We set up our “clinic” inside a basketball court in the middle of town, which had no AC and was 90+ degrees on any given day. By the time we got there each morning, there was a line down the street of smiling faces waiting for treatment. Locals throughout the day would come in to see us for acupuncture and herbs, always bringing fresh squeezed juices, yuca, and water to keep us hydrated and fed. At the end of the week the town thanked us by roasting a pig and throwing us a dance party. ⁣

Hey y’all! I thought I’d use my quarantine Friday to reintroduce myself. I’m Dr. Floyd, a practitioner of acupuncture & herbal medicine. ⁣

My passion for Chinese medicine started when I worked in China for 3 years after college. Anytime I would get sick, feel a cold coming on, have sleep trouble, I would visit the town’s Chinese medicine doctor. I would get an acupuncture treatment and be sent home with an herbal formula created for my specific issues that day. ⁣
⁣
I was amazed by the efficacy of “ancient medicine.” I felt like the stigma of natural/“old” medicine meant it wouldn’t work as well.... and I was quickly proven wrong. There is a reason the practice has been around for thousands of years! ⁣

Fast forward to now, I’m living and working in Sacramento. I specialize in women’s health (fertility, PCOS, endometriosis, period discomforts, menopause) and emotional wellness (anxiety, stress, and sleep). ⁣

“As most of you know, this last year I have been dedicated to understanding my body and how out of whack I was. Driving to work at 5am feeling drunk from lack of sleep, low energy so much so that I couldn’t go for a run, constant stress and worry, and just feeling off. ⁣⁣⁣

I saw and would sit in her room and just cry. I knew deep down I wasn’t taking care of myself on even a basic level. Every week she told me over and over “you MUST get some rest. You MUST take care of yourself first. You owe this to yourself and your family” little by little we chipped away at how I was feeling. ⁣⁣⁣

Acupuncture is so amazing for so many reasons but one reason that really helped me was that it allowed me to disconnect and be alone with myself for 45 min. To think and reflect on my week and see if I was doing all of the things to help my situation. All of her advice worked for me. Sleep. Warm food. Deep breathing. Bone broth. Gratitude. ⁣⁣⁣

As I work away this weekend on the final touches of my Chinese herbal product line, Dr. Floyd Rx, it’s hard to not think about how everything has come full circle. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Before my career as a Doctor of Chinese medicine, I was living in China working in the non profit sector. I often found myself at the local herbalist and acupuncturist. I was drawn to the whole process. The herbalist looking at my tongue and feeling my pulse to find the perfect formula for my symptoms, me trying to explain what was going on in Mandarin and the doctor laughing at my tones and mispronunciations as he was weighing out my herbs. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When he would finally hand over the herbal blend of loose herbs wrapped up in a paper bag, I would get so excited. I would run home to boil down the herbal tea and drink it like it was liquid gold. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I had such fast results from this “traditional medicine” with anything I was seeking relief from- allergies, a cold, sleep issues, menstrual pain. I was hooked and continued to stop by on my walk home from work, just to watch him weigh the herbs and interact with his patients. (He eventually taught me myofascial release, what we call “fire cupping,” and let me practice on his patients!)⁣⁣

I remember coming home to visit my family during Christmas and bringing my fire cups home that the doctor gifted me. I pulled them out of my suitcase so excited for my first “patient” (my family). ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I had no idea that, 10 years later, I would be doing this as my career. Cupping patients, administering acupuncture, and about to release my first herbal product line. (So soon y’all!!)⁣⁣

When I make it back to China I’ll have to stop by that same herbalist and tell him that this foreigner is now a Chinese medicine doctor opening her very own herbal line. It’s amazing how the universe works, isn’t it? 💫💫⁣
