From October 14–19, 2026, Guanara: Ancestral Remembrance opens in Kiskeya, Dominican Republic — a five-day ceremonial immersion in Taíno ceramics and foodways.

Born from the vision of Akutu Irka Mateo and guided by her, Guanara will gather us in a small circle to return to the land through the hands, through clay, fire, food, ceremony, and living memory.

— We shape clay and enter the ancient language of Taíno ceramics.

— We build a ceramics kiln with our own hands.

— We prepare casabe and uiko, following the memory of yuca and the foodways that have nourished our people for generations.

— We learn in relationship with the land and with the people who continue carrying these living traditions.

The ancestors are calling us back — to the hands, to the earth, to what has never fully left us.

Guanara is an invitation to listen, to remember, and to experience these living arts in Kiskeya, where memory continues to breathe.

When I was about nine years old, we moved into a house my parents had just built, on the outskirts of the capital, when everything was still wilderness. Horses and cows passed along the newly opened road, and that was where my stories with the maco, the Taíno frog, began.

From time to time, the house would fill with my sisters’ cries for help: “MAAAACO!” Off I went to my task of catching them, an unspoken agreement among all the members of my family.

In those moments of close encounter, I learned that the saying “if a maco pees in your eyes, it makes you blind” was not true: sometimes when I tried to catch them with my small hands, the frightened macos would spray my eyes, forcing me to close them, as they escaped.

That role was perfect for me. I was fascinated roaming in nature, spending my time playing with the little green snakes that appeared in the garden, earthworms, and above all, the macos

I loved feeling their viscous skin, looking at their astonishing fingers and leaps, and listening to their croaking at night, especially when it called in the rain and, like a lullaby, carried me to sleep with deep happiness in my heart and a smile resting on my lips.

The maco is a power animal, a messenger of nature and of the wisdom of Mother Earth in Taíno culture. Its croak announces rain and shifts in the cycles of the land. It represents transformation, fertility, and renewal, which is why it appears in petroglyphs, ceramics, and creation stories. Even Atabeira, our Universal Mother, is depicted with maco legs, symbolizing the connection between the cycles of earth and life.

Like the cycles of the maco, Itiba Kaubaba, our Mother Earth, entered a portal of renewal and transformation at the winter solstice. From egg to tadpole to adult, she completes her cycle and will allow us to witness the fullness and maturation of 2026.

May this New Year be fertile, transformative, and alive with possibility, my people.

My dear community,

I want to share something with you from the heart, with love, compassion, and sweetness. After five beautiful years of gathering under Karaya, I’ve decided that this December will be the last Full Moon ceremony that I will guide.

This hasn’t been easy to say, but the timing finally feels right. My soul has been asking me to live differently for quite some time now. It is asking me to make more room for my creative work as a ceramic artist and songwriter, and to bring our community to Kiskeya for a yearly educational and spiritual gathering as family.

These Full Moon ceremonies are what gave birth to our Sacred Taíno Healing community. They’ve been our place of prayer, music, tears, laughter, remembering, and reconnecting. I hold immense gratitude to Grandmother Karaya and to you for showing up, whether once or many times over the years. You truly matter to me.

I also want to share a surprise: you will still be able to celebrate the Full Moon with the Sacred Taíno Healing community. Our dear Tatianni will be stepping into holding the ceremonies as she transitions from the New Moons into this role, and I’m grateful that the moon will continue to be honored in this community.

I will also continue guiding ceremonies for the Equinoxes, the Solstices, and Day of the Dead, so we will keep gathering, honoring the earth’s cycles, and remembering our ancestors. We’re simply letting things evolve so it stays alive, real, and sustainable for me.

For our last Full Moon together in this way, I’d love for it to feel like a celebration, a moment to honor all that’s been shared and to welcome what’s opening next.

The Mucaro is quiet and mysterious. By day, it hides in trees, caves, or rocky cliffs. At night, it comes alive, gliding silently through the darkness; we won’t even hear its wings.

When it’s time to raise a family, the Mucaro finds a cozy hole in a tree or cave. The female lays three to four white eggs, and both parents care for the blind, soft-down chicks.

It’s also a helpful hunter, feeding on rats, mice, lizards, and insects, keeping farms in balance.

And here’s the magical part: to our Taíno ancestors, and Afro-Taino people today, the Mucaro is a messenger from the spirit world. Its haunting call carries the voices of loved ones who have passed, bringing guidance or warnings.
