In cytology, we examine the cells not the architecture.
In cytology we examine the cellular morphology and relation to each others after their hatvest by mechanical force applied during aspiration. The relation between the cells and the tissue is lost in cytology. Like leaves on the tree. If we hatvest the leaves from the tree with a strong forcible movement, the leaves fall while the tree arms remains. So, we only have the cells after their fall to be examined microscopically.
In biopsy, we remove or cut a piece of the tissue and each structure is still in its actual location. So, we can evaluate the relation between the cells and tissue skeleton.
This is exemplified by the pomegranate. In biopsy, we cut the fruit to see the seeds relation, location and also their position inbetween the white septa. In cytology, we only find the free fallen seeds dispersed on the floor.
