Before I begin, I want to say something important.
What I'm about to describe is not a universal rule.
Not every woman will relate to this.
Not every man will see himself in it.
Every relationship is unique, and every person is different.
I'm simply addressing a common pattern that I've observed repeatedly in real life—one that is often overlooked, especially in response to the popular sayings that many people have come to accept as truth.
We've all heard the jokes...
"Women are impossible to understand."
"It's just her hormones."
"Women are so emotional."
These sayings have been repeated so often that many people accept them as truth.
Yes, hormones can influence mood and sexual desire.
But they do not explain everything.
And they certainly don't mean that women are "impossible to understand."
Women can carry enormous emotional weight.
They can stand beside their husbands through seasons of struggle.
They can tolerate uncertainty, hardship, and life's many challenges—especially when they feel they are walking with their partner, not carrying the burden alone.
Dr. Gabor Maté once illustrated this idea in one of his talks (this is the meaning, not his exact words):
When he struggled with feelings of inferiority and a lack of self-trust, he described it as being like the frog in the fairy tale, wondering:
"If I'm the frog, why would any princess want to kiss a frog?"
His point was that the way we see ourselves doesn't stay inside us. It inevitably affects how we show up in our intimate relationships and how our partners experience closeness and attraction.
Many men believe that women lose desire because of appearance, routine, or hormones.
Sometimes that's true.
But there's another reason that is rarely discussed.
When a man constantly sees himself as "not enough"...
When he has stopped trusting himself...
When he complains more than he grows...
When he expects his wife to carry the emotional weight of his life...
She may slowly stop experiencing him as someone she can lean into.
A woman's desire is connected to much more than physical attraction. For many women, it is deeply connected to emotional safety, respect, admiration, and the experience of being with a man who is willing to face himself, take responsibility for his healing, and continue growing, and the feeling that her partner is standing on his own feet.
This doesn't mean a man should hide his emotions.
Quite the opposite.
Healthy vulnerability creates intimacy.
But there is a profound difference between saying,
"I'm struggling, and I'm working through it."
and living in a place of chronic helplessness, self-doubt, or refusing to do the inner work.
Healing isn't only a gift to yourself.
Sometimes, it's one of the greatest gifts you can give your marriage.
Let's stop clinging to popular sayings as though they were unquestionable truths, allowing them to become excuses to avoid facing ourselves, doing the inner work, and investing in our relationships.
