FDA has approved a new oral form of semaglutide for long-term weight reduction in adults with obesity or overweight.

The new oral tablet is also indicated for reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events in adults with established CV disease who have obesity or overweight.

A longitudinal study found that high consumption of artificial sweeteners was linked to 62% faster cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults - equivalent to 1.6 extra years of aging. In a meta-analysis that included over 3,700 patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and obesity, semaglutide lowered the rate of worsening HF events compared with placebo.

In a subgroup analysis, patients with body mass index ≥35 kg/m2 were more likely to benefit from semaglutide than those with lower body mass index. In patients with HFpEF and obesity, we suggest a GLP-1 receptor agonist and lifestyle interventions for weight loss rather than lifestyle interventions alone.
