Surgical removal of ovarian teratoma in Arabian mare. Ghaidaa RashadVet Mohd Abbas.
Ovarian teratoma in mares is a rare ovarian germ-cell tumor arising from totipotent germ cells. It contains tissues derived from one or more embryonic germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm), such as hair, skin, teeth, bone, cartilage, fat, or glandular tissue.
Clinical Features
* Usually unilateral.
* Often discovered incidentally during reproductive examinations.
* May cause:
* Infertility or subfertility.
* Irregular estrous cycles.
* Ovarian enlargement.
* Occasionally abdominal discomfort.
* Unlike a Granulosa-Theca Cell Tumor, teratomas are generally not hormonally active, so stallion-like behavior is uncommon.
