Feeling disturbingly full after a moderate meal, or being unable to finish the same meals you eat everyday may not alert you if it occurs once in a while. This is something we all experience.
But as it repeats, you start to wonder what’s causing it and you may even visit a doctor to check on the cause.
This is called indigestion; it is not a disease, it’s a combination of symptoms like burning in the stomach, pain, bloating, belching & gas. There may be acidic taste in the mouth with nausea & vomiting.
The failure of treatment can come from lack of defining the cause. Especially that there are many causes (which can be overlooked) for indigestion:
-Acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus.
-Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which may also be accompanied with bloating or inflammation.
-Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) which can cause fermentation and gas.
-Thyroid diseases can affect digestion by slowing the movement of the gut (peristalsis) so food stays inside for too long without moving out.
-Lifestyle: stress, food intolerances, high-fat diet (especially if there's not enough bile production), increased caffeine &/or alcohol intake, and smoking.
-Other less common causes would be: gastroparesis (when the GIT muscles can't move so the food inside is not digested/emptied), and some medications (like NSAIDs).
The diagnosis of disease or medication causing indigestion can be manageable. What’s not manageable is when medication is prescribed with no clear cause. Here the meds can cause adverse effects instead of curing the problem (even if it masked the symptoms for a while).
An advanced approach that takes into consideration every part of your diet, medical history, sleeping habits, sensitivities, physical activities & any other underlying condition is key to manage indigestion. We grant you this approach through Revive’s care plans.
