The Witches’ Well of Edinburgh 🧙‍♀️🔥

The Witches’ Well is a small but haunting memorial located on the Castle Esplanade in Edinburgh, close to the entrance of Edinburgh Castle. It commemorates the people accused of witchcraft in Scotland during the great witch hunts of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Between 1563 and 1736, when Scotland’s Witchcraft Act was in force, thousands of people—most of them women—were accused of practicing witchcraft. Scotland experienced one of the most intense periods of witch persecution in Europe relative to its population. Many suspects were imprisoned, tortured and executed.

A significant number of Edinburgh’s executions took place around Castlehill, near where the memorial stands today. Those condemned were often strangled before their bodies were burned, rather than being burned alive as popular legend sometimes suggests.

The Witches’ Well itself was created in 1894 by Scottish artist John Duncan. Its bronze plaque is filled with symbolism. At its centre are the heads of Hygeia, the Greek goddess associated with health, and her father Asclepius, accompanied by a serpent. The imagery reflects the contradictory historical perception of witchcraft: knowledge and healing on one side, fear and supposed evil on the other.

An inscription refers to the severe persecution suffered by those accused of witchcraft, making the Well one of Edinburgh’s smallest yet most powerful reminders of a very dark chapter in Scottish history.

Today, thousands of visitors walk past it on their way to the castle without even noticing it—a discreet memorial to people whose lives ended because superstition, fear and accusation became deadly.
