Moving abroad is often described as an academic journey, a cultural experience, or an adventure.

But for many students, it becomes something deeper.

Living in a different country challenges familiar routines, perspectives, and expectations. Along the way, you may notice changes in how you communicate, how you build relationships, what you value, and even how you see yourself.

Some of these changes feel empowering. Others may leave you questioning parts of your identity that once felt certain.

That doesn't mean something is wrong.

Growth and uncertainty often go hand in hand.

Studying abroad isn't just about discovering a new place. Sometimes it's about discovering a new version of yourself.

If you're navigating the challenges of living and studying abroad, support is available.

Living abroad can amplify stress in ways many students don’t expect.

When you’re overwhelmed, anxious, isolated, or mentally exhausted, intrusive thoughts can become louder — repetitive worries, overthinking, worst-case scenarios, or thoughts that feel difficult to turn off.

The important thing to understand is this:
A thought is not automatically a fact.
And having an intrusive thought does not define who you are.

One of the strangest parts of living abroad is realizing that loneliness doesn’t always look like being alone.
Sometimes it looks like:

having plans every weekend
being around people constantly
and still feeling like nobody really knows you yet

For many American students in Spain, building real connection takes longer than expected.
New culture.
New environment.
New social dynamics.

That adjustment can feel emotionally exhausting, even when everything “looks fine” from the outside.
And honestly? That experience is more common than people admit.

For many American students, studying abroad means adapting not only to a new country — but also to a completely different academic environment.
Different classroom dynamics, grading systems, communication styles, and expectations can create a level of pressure that often goes unnoticed.

And when you combine that with homesickness, culture shock, and the stress of living abroad, it can feel overwhelming at times.

Adjusting takes time.
And struggling with the transition doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

This week took us to Barcelona for the APUNE Conference, where we had the opportunity to speak about sexual aggression awareness and connect with professionals working closely with study abroad students across Spain and Europe.

What made the experience especially meaningful wasn’t only the conference itself — but also the conversations in between.

From sharing stories with strangers at a local restaurant to meeting program coordinators from different international education programs, the trip became a reminder of how important human connection is while living and studying abroad.

We were also grateful for the opportunity to introduce Unison Health to people working directly with American students navigating life overseas.

Conversations like these matter.
Awareness matters.
Support matters.

You might enjoy the experience…
and still feel out of place at times.

You might like where you are…
and still miss where you came from.

That mix of emotions is more common than people admit.

Adjusting to life abroad isn’t a straight line.
And feeling unsettled doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

That’s one of the most common experiences for American students living abroad.

Not because something is wrong —
but because building meaningful relationships takes time, especially in a new environment.

Different cultures connect differently.
Different people open up at different speeds.

And when you’re far from everything familiar, that gap feels bigger.

If you’ve felt this, you’re not behind.
You’re just in the process.
