🎉 Celebrating 7 Years of BOMBA FITNESS CAMPELLO! 🎉

This summer marks 7 incredible years of BOMBA FITNESS CAMPELLO.

The journey hasn't always been easy. In the early years, building my reputation and becoming the go-to person in the area for not only fitness, but also health optimisation, lifestyle improvement, and longevity, took a huge amount of hard work and determination.

Over the past two years, however, we have truly taken off. We've built a fantastic community of dedicated members and personal training clients who have become much more than just gym members—they're part of our BOMBA VITALITY family.

Over the years, I've realised that good health is about far more than exercise alone. Physical fitness is important, but so is having a strong support network, meaningful social connections, and a community that motivates and encourages one another to stay healthy and active.

To celebrate our 7th anniversary, we enjoyed a fabulous buffet dinner at EL BOCATA - EL CAMPELLO. A huge thank you to Daphne and Lena for your amazing organisation and delicious food.

We then headed to Open Beach Rooftop for our private White Party celebration, and what a fantastic night it was! Thank-you to Paco the owner and all the staff for always being so accomedating.

As part of the celebrations, we presented 7 special awards to members who consistently show up, stand out, and inspire others through their commitment to health and wellbeing.

Every single member of BOMBA FITNESS is amazing and works incredibly hard to stay fit and healthy, but these ladies deserve special recognition:

🏆 WINNER OF THE YEAR – Denise Busot

At 67 years young, Denise has a functional biological age of just 35 and an incredible amount of energy. Despite living with a lung condition and a troublesome knee, she attends five fitness classes a week, as well as paddle, badminton, walking, swimming, music, and singing lessons. Over the past couple of years, she has lost more than 4 stone and is looking and feeling fantastic. A truly inspiring example of what dedication can achieve.

🏆 MOTIVATOR OF THE YEAR – Carla Arce

Carla attends most classes every week, always pushes herself to do her best, and encourages everyone around her to work harder too. Her positive influence on the group is invaluable.

🏆 POSITIVE ENERGY AWARD – Clarissa Chambers

Clarissa brings smiles wherever she goes. Her cheerful personality, infectious enthusiasm, and occasional singing brighten every class. She always works hard and lifts the spirits of everyone around her.

🏆 LIFESTYLE CHANGE AWARD – Victoria Hills

Victoria has completely transformed her life since joining us. Over the past couple of years, she has lost 4 stone, become stronger, toned up, and embraced a healthier lifestyle. She often says she's never going back, and she looks absolutely fabulous.

🏆 RISING STAR AWARD – Angelika Lyson

At 73 years old, Angelika proves that age is never a barrier. She regularly attends two Pilates classes each week and participates in personal training sessions using free weights and the Smith machine. She is living proof that it's never too late to improve strength, posture, and confidence.

🏆 COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD – Kate

Always cheerful, supportive, and ready to get involved, Kate embodies the spirit of our community. As our fitness band monitor and is always contributing ideas for future events. Her care and support for everyone in the group make a huge difference.

🏆 COACH'S CHOICE AWARD – Sandra Mohamed

Sandra is an extraordinary example of resilience and determination. Following both knee and shoulder replacement surgeries, she committed herself to becoming strong again. Her consultant has said that her recovery has surpassed that of many other patients. Through her rehabilitation training with me, she has regained movement that was once thought impossible. Walking over 15,000 steps a day and continually encouraging others to join us, Sandra is a true inspiration.

❤️ Thank you to every single member who has been part of the BOMBA FITNESS journey over the past 7 years. Your commitment, support, and friendship are what make this community so special.

Here's to the next chapter of fitness, vitality, health, friendship, and living life to the fullest together!

🌟Our MEMBERS OF THE MONTH OF APRIL are... Angelika Lyson and Amanda Towns 🌟

A huge congratulations to our amazing winners… 👏

I am so proud of both of you and everything you’ve achieved 💛

Angelika – you are truly inspiring. At 73, you decided to take control of your posture, strength and muscle mass after 2 years of inactivity due to illness. Your commitment to 2 Pilates classes and 1 personal training session each week is really paying off. We’re already seeing less back pain and a noticeable improvement in your posture – even your friends have commented! With your determination and positive mindset, I know you’ll keep progressing even further.

Amanda – your journey has been incredible to watch. From starting out with lighter weights and dealing with ongoing shoulder and knee pain, to now confidently using 4kg weights in Pump class – what a transformation! Your strength has grown, and with it, your pain has reduced significantly. That’s down to your consistency and hard work.

Both of you are shining examples of what dedication can achieve. Keep it up ladies! 💪✨

Are You Aging… or Just Getting Older? 🧬

Chronological age is just a number. What really matters is your biological age—how well your body is actually functioning. That’s where functional longevity metrics come in.

Here are the key markers that tell the real story of your health and lifespan:

💪 Grip Strength (kg)
A powerful predictor of overall strength, neurological health, and even mortality risk. Strong grip = strong system.

🫀 VO2 Estimate
Measures cardiovascular fitness and oxygen efficiency. Higher VO2 = better endurance, heart health, and longevity.

🪑 Sit-to-Stand (30 secs)
Tests lower body strength and functional independence. It reflects how well you’ll move as you age.

🚶 Gait Speed (m/s)
One of the simplest yet strongest indicators of survival and vitality. Faster walking speed often means a longer life.

📏 Waist-to-Height Ratio
A better measure than BMI for fat distribution. Central fat = higher risk for metabolic disease.

🌿 Lifestyle Score (0–10)
Captures sleep, stress, movement, and habits. Longevity is built daily, not in the gym alone.

⚖️ Weight (kg) & BMI
Basic but useful when paired with deeper metrics. Context matters more than the number.

💧 Hydration (%)
Essential for cellular function, energy, and recovery. Even mild dehydration impacts performance and aging.

🦴 Bone Density (kg)
Critical for preventing fractures and maintaining independence later in life.

💥 Muscle Mass (%)
Muscle is your longevity engine. It regulates metabolism, protects joints, and supports mobility.

🔥 Fat (%) & Visceral Fat (%)
Not all fat is equal. Visceral fat (around organs) drives inflammation and chronic disease risk.

⏳ Metabolic Age
Compares your metabolism to age norms. A lower metabolic age = a younger internal system.

🏋️ Physical Rating
An overall snapshot of fitness level—how your body performs, not just how it looks.

⚡ BMR Calories
Your baseline energy burn. It reflects metabolic health and influences weight management.

🥗 Nutrition Score (0–10)
Food quality drives everything—from energy to inflammation to cellular repair. Obesity and dehydration causes disease in the body.

Why This Matters

Longevity isn’t about living longer—it’s about living better.
These metrics help you:

✔ Detect early decline before disease shows up
✔ Track functional performance, not just appearance
✔ Personalize your health strategy
✔ Stay strong, mobile, and independent for life

The goal?
Not just more years… but more life in those years.

Measure what matters. Train for function. Age intelligently. 🚀

Congratulations to our two MEMBERS OF THE MONTH! Carla Arce and Marion Craig

Carla has been consistent from the moment she joined us a few months ago! She’s showing up week after week, taking on 5 different classes, lifting 5kg weights, and always choosing the tougher options during ab workouts 🔥 She even smashed an incredible 5 classes in one day as part of the El Campello fitness initiative — amazing dedication!

Marion has also been showing fantastic consistency. Even after illness and a holiday break, she’s come back stronger than ever 💥 She’s now lifting 5kg dumbbells and proving that online PT sessions can deliver seriously impressive results!

Huge well done to both of you — your hard work and commitment don’t go unnoticed 👏

ACHES & PAINS AS YOU AGE?
THE SCIENCE BEHIND MUSCLE LOSS & INACTIVITY

🧠 It’s Not “Just Aging” — It’s Biology

Many people assume that aches, stiffness, and reduced mobility are an unavoidable part of getting older. While aging does bring changes, a major and often overlooked cause of these symptoms is loss of muscle mass and physical inactivity.

This condition is known as sarcopenia — the age-related decline in muscle size, strength, and function.

- Begins as early as your 30s–40s
- Accelerates after age 60
- Can lead to up to 3–8% muscle loss per decade

🔬 What Happens Inside Your Body?

As you age, several biological processes change:

1. Reduced Muscle Protein Synthesis

Your body becomes less efficient at building and repairing muscle tissue. Even if you eat enough protein, your muscles respond less effectively — a phenomenon called anabolic resistance.

2. Hormonal Changes

Levels of key hormones decline, including:

- Testosterone
- Growth hormone
- Estrogen

These hormones play a critical role in maintaining muscle mass and tissue repair.

3. Neuromuscular Decline

The connection between nerves and muscles weakens over time:

- Fewer motor neurons activate muscle fibers
- Muscle contractions become less efficient
- Coordination and balance decline

⚠️ Why This Causes Pain

Muscles are essential for joint stability and load distribution. When muscle mass decreases:

- Joints absorb more stress → leading to discomfort and inflammation
- Posture deteriorates → causing back, neck, and shoulder pain
- Movement patterns become inefficient → increasing strain and injury risk

Over time, this contributes to chronic pain conditions and reduced mobility.

🪑 The Role of Inactivity

Physical inactivity accelerates muscle loss dramatically.

When you don’t use your muscles:

- Muscle fibers shrink (atrophy)
- Strength declines rapidly
- Connective tissues stiffen
- Blood flow and oxygen delivery decrease

Even short periods of inactivity (like prolonged sitting or bed rest) can lead to measurable muscle loss.

📉 The Vicious Cycle

Pain → less movement → more muscle loss → more pain

This cycle can become self-reinforcing, making it harder to regain strength and function over time.

🧪 Evidence from Research

- Studies show that resistance training can significantly improve muscle mass and strength, even in people over 70–80 years old.
- Increased muscle strength is linked to reduced joint pain and improved mobility.
- Regular movement helps regulate inflammation and improves circulation, both of which reduce discomfort.

💪 What You Can Do

The body remains adaptable at any age. You can slow, stop, and even reverse many of these changes.

✔️ Strength Training (2–3x per week)

- Builds muscle mass
- Improves joint support
- Enhances metabolic health

✔️ Daily Movement

- Walking, light activity, or stretching
- Prevents stiffness and improves circulation

✔️ Adequate Protein Intake

- Supports muscle repair and growth
- Spread intake evenly throughout the day

✔️ Balance & Mobility Work

- Reduces fall risk
- Improves coordination and joint function

❤️ Key Takeaway

Aches and pains are not always an inevitable part of aging.

They are often a signal of muscle loss and underuse.

By staying active and maintaining muscle strength, you can:

- Reduce pain
- Improve mobility
- Maintain independence
- Enhance overall quality of life

🔁 Move More. Strengthen Your Body. Age Better.
