How many senses do we have?
There are two distinct frameworks. The scientific/neuroscientific framework and the spiritual/intuitive framework.
Both have five basic senses and vary in their additional senses.
The first five senses are:
1. Touch — sensing contact, pressure, texture, vibration, etc.
2. Taste — detecting flavors
3. Smell — detecting odors
4. Hearing — hearing sounds
5. Sight — seeing
They can be listed either in an evolutionary sequence or in a fetal developmental sequence.
Evolutionary
1&2. Taste and Smell: Ancient, single-celled bacteria.
3. Touch: Emerged as organisms became multicellular.
4. Sight: Single-celled organisms could only tell light from dark.
5. Hearing: The newest core sense evolved from early balance systems.
Fetal Development
1. Touch: 7-8 Weeks
2&3. Taste and Smell: 8-14 Weeks
4. Hearing: 20 Weeks
5. Sight: 24-28 Weeks
The Scientific/neuroscientific framework 6-8
6: Vestibular sense - Equilibrium: Keeps you upright while walking, running, or sitting. Coordination: Works closely with your eyes and muscles so your vision stays steady while you move. Spatial Awareness: Helps you know which way is up and how your body moves through space.
7: Proprioception - It is often called your "sixth sense" or body awareness. It is your body’s ability to sense its own position, movement, and location in space without needing to look.
8: Interoception – It is your body's ability to sense and understand its own internal signals. It is often described as your "eighth sense" and acts as your body's internal thermostat, telling you what is happening inside your organs rather than outside in the world.
The Spiritual/intuitive framework 6+7
6. Sixth sense: intuition — an inner knowing, gut feeling, or subtle sense that something is right, wrong, safe, or significant, even when you cannot logically explain why.
7. Seventh sense: the “Clairs” — forms of intuitive or extrasensory perception such as:
Clairvoyance: “Clear seeing”
Clairsentience: “Clear feeling/sensing”
Claircognizance: “Clear knowing”
Clairaudience: “Clear hearing”
Clairsalience: “Clear smelling”
Clairgustance: “Clear tasting”
Clairangency: “Clear touching”
Clairempathy: “Clear emotional feeling”
Additionally, Interoception is a mainly scientifically recognized sensory process. It explains how your body perceives and interprets signals originating within your body. It is often discussed alongside bodily awareness and emotional regulation.
Here is what I found important for Highly Sensitive People and Empaths to know. The signals we receive can sometimes be difficult to interpret. A physical sensation, an emotion, an intuitive knowing, or something we perceive from another person can feel remarkably similar.
Let’s define the distinction between Interoception, Intuition, Clairsentience, and Clairempathy:
Interoception: What is happening inside my own body?
This is the ability to notice and interpret internal bodily signals such as your heartbeat, breathing, hunger, thirst, tension, temperature, or the need to rest.
Intuition: What do I know or sense without consciously reasoning it out?
Intuition is an inner knowing or perception that seems to arise without a clear, conscious thought process explaining how you arrived at it.
Clairsentience: What am I sensing or feeling through my intuitive perception?
Clairsentience is commonly described as “clear feeling” — receiving information through sensations, feelings, or impressions rather than through ordinary reasoning or the physical senses.
Clairempathy: What am I picking up from another person emotionally or energetically?
Clairempathy is commonly understood as the ability to perceive or experience another person’s emotional state as an empathic impression. You may suddenly feel sadness, anxiety, excitement, or another emotion without initially recognizing that it may not have originated within you.
For an Empath, learning to distinguish these four experiences can be incredibly valuable.
You might ask yourself:
Is this coming from my body? → Interoception
Is this an inner knowing? → Intuition
Am I receiving a feeling or sensation intuitively? → Clairsentience
Could I be picking up something from another person? → Clairempathy
The experiences can overlap, which is exactly what can make them confusing. A racing heart might be your body responding to something happening internally. It might accompany an emotion. You might intuitively sense that something is wrong. Or, in an empathic experience, you might suddenly notice a feeling that seems connected to someone around you.
The goal is not to immediately label every sensation. The goal is to become curious about where the information is coming from.
The more familiar you become with your own body, emotions, intuition, and empathic perception, the easier it can become to recognize what is yours, what may be information from your body, and what you may be perceiving from outside yourself.
