Why do babies fall asleep at the breast? 🤱💕
Because breastfeeding is so much more than food.
When a baby feeds at the breast, they receive warmth, comfort, connection, safety, and reassurance alongside their milk. The act of sucking releases hormones that help both mother and baby relax, creating the perfect conditions for sleep.
Your baby’s nervous system is still developing, and being close to you helps regulate their breathing, heart rate, temperature, and emotions. The breast is not just a place to feed; it’s a place where babies feel secure and protected.
Many parents worry that their baby is “using them as a dummy” or that feeding to sleep is a bad habit. In reality, feeding to sleep is a biologically normal behaviour. Babies are designed to seek the breast not only when they are hungry, but also when they need comfort, connection, or help settling to sleep.
For thousands of years, babies have fallen asleep in their mother’s arms while breastfeeding. It’s not a bad habit but nature’s design.
Of course, every baby is different, and if you’re concerned about your baby’s feeding, weight gain, or sleep patterns, it’s always worth speaking with your healthcare provider or a qualified feeding specialist.
But if your baby drifts off peacefully at the breast, know that they’re doing exactly what babies have evolved to do. 🫶🏼
