Today is Diwali!
Also called Dipawali, this is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row of clay lamps that celebrants light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.
Diwali is a five-day festival celebrated in India and throughout the world by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists alike.
Hindu people interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live. But there's one common theme no matter where people celebrate: the victory of good over evil. The five days of Diwali are marked by prayer, feasts, fireworks, family gatherings, and charitable giving. For some, Diwali is also the beginning of a new year.
Wishing a happy Diwali to all who celebrate.
