Emotional intelligence: the skill that shapes how we work, lead and connect

For decades, IQ was seen as the main predictor of success. While cognitive ability is undoubtedly important, research increasingly shows that emotional intelligence (EQ) plays a crucial role in how we manage ourselves, build relationships and respond to challenges.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to:
• recognise and understand your own emotions
• regulate emotional responses effectively
• empathise with others
• communicate with awareness and respect
• navigate conflict and build strong relationships

These skills influence almost every area of life, from teamwork and leadership to decision-making and resilience under pressure.

Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence is not fixed. It can be developed through greater self-awareness, reflection and practice.

Developing emotional intelligence doesn't mean suppressing emotions or always staying calm. It means understanding emotions and responding thoughtfully rather than reacting automatically.

Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) can help strengthen emotional awareness, reduce unhelpful thinking patterns and improve emotional regulation, supporting healthier relationships at work and in everyday life.

Success isn't only about how well we think.

It's also about how well we understand ourselves and connect with others.

The conversation around mental health often focuses on the people who need support.

But what about the people providing it?

Around the world, demand for mental health services continues to grow, yet healthcare systems are struggling to keep pace. In many countries, there simply aren't enough trained professionals, services remain underfunded, and access to care depends on where you live rather than what you need.

This isn't just a healthcare challenge. It's a workforce challenge.

Without investment in psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health nurses, counsellors, social workers and community support services, millions of people will continue to face long waits, limited access or no care at all.

A stronger mental health workforce means:
• Earlier intervention.
• Better patient outcomes.
• Reduced pressure on healthcare systems.
• Healthier, more productive communities.

Mental health has never been more important. Now it's time to ensure the people delivering care have the resources, training and support they need to meet growing demand.

Because improving mental health isn't just about raising awareness.

It's about building the workforce that makes care possible.

The role of gratitude in mental health

Gratitude is often misunderstood as simply "looking on the bright side". In reality, it is not about ignoring life's challenges or pretending everything is perfect.

Instead, gratitude is about consciously recognising the positive aspects of life, even during difficult times.

Research suggests that practising gratitude can support mental wellbeing by increasing positive emotions, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improving overall life satisfaction. It may also help shift our attention away from automatic negative thinking patterns without denying the reality of difficult experiences.

Simple ways to practise gratitude include:
• writing down three things you are grateful for each day
• expressing appreciation to someone who has helped you
• taking a moment to notice small, positive experiences during your day
• reflecting on personal strengths or achievements

Importantly, gratitude is not about toxic positivity or suppressing difficult emotions. Healthy gratitude allows space for both appreciation and struggle.

Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) can help people develop a more balanced thinking style, making it easier to recognise positive experiences while addressing unhelpful thought patterns.

Gratitude doesn't change the past or remove life's challenges.

But it can change the way we relate to them.

Gratitude is often thought of as a simple, even polite emotion, something we express when someone holds a door open or gives us a gift. Yet in psychological research, gratitude is far more than good manners. It is a powerful emotional process that can shape how we regulate emotions, relate to others...

When we talk about the economy, we often focus on inflation, productivity and growth.

Rarely do we talk about mental health.

Yet mental health conditions cost the global economy around US$1 trillion every year in lost productivity from anxiety and depression alone. The true cost extends even further, affecting innovation, workforce participation, healthcare systems and long-term economic growth.

Behind every statistic is someone struggling to perform at work, stay in education, care for their family or simply get through the day.

Investing in mental health isn't just the right thing to do. It's one of the smartest economic decisions we can make.

Early intervention, accessible treatment and supportive workplaces don't just improve lives. They strengthen organisations, reduce long-term costs and help build more resilient communities and economies.

The question isn't whether we can afford to invest in mental health.

It's whether we can afford not to.

Healthy minds create stronger businesses, stronger communities and stronger economies.

What Bali can teach us about mental wellbeing

When we think of Bali, we often picture beautiful beaches, lush landscapes and a slower pace of life. But perhaps one of its greatest lessons is not the scenery, it is the way wellbeing is woven into everyday life.

In many communities, mental wellbeing is supported through simple but meaningful practices:
🌿 spending time in nature
🤝 strong social connections
🙏 moments of reflection and gratitude
⚖️ creating space for balance between work and rest

While no place is immune to stress or mental health challenges, these daily habits remind us that wellbeing is often built through small, consistent actions rather than dramatic changes.

Research shows that spending time in nature, maintaining supportive relationships and practising mindfulness can all help reduce stress and improve psychological wellbeing over time.

The lesson isn't that we all need to move to or should regularly travel to Bali.

It's that we can bring some of these principles into our own lives, wherever we are.

Sometimes, improving mental health starts with slowing down, reconnecting with ourselves and making space for what truly matters.

Having a mental health condition is hard enough.

Not being able to access the care you need makes it even harder.

Around the world, millions of people are living with anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. Yet only around one in three people with depression receive formal mental health care, and only one in four people with anxiety disorders receive treatment.

The gap isn't because people don't want help.

It's because too many face barriers such as limited services, long waiting lists, financial constraints, workforce shortages and the stigma that still surrounds mental health.

When people cannot access support early, conditions often become more severe, affecting relationships, education, employment and physical health. The cost is felt not only by individuals, but by families, communities and society as a whole.

Mental healthcare should never be a privilege. It should be accessible, timely and available to everyone who needs it.

Awareness starts the conversation. Access changes lives.

Stress is not always bad. Sometimes, it helps us thrive.

When we hear the word stress, we often think of exhaustion, anxiety or burnout. But not all stress is harmful.

Psychologists use the term eustress to describe positive stress: the kind that motivates us, sharpens our focus, and helps us grow. Examples include starting a new job, preparing for an important presentation, training for a marathon, or becoming a parent.

Unlike chronic stress, eustress feels challenging but manageable. It can:
• increase motivation and energy
• improve concentration and performance
• build confidence through overcoming challenges
• support learning, resilience and personal growth

The key difference is not always the situation itself, but how we perceive it. When we believe we have the resources to cope, the brain is more likely to interpret the experience as a challenge rather than a threat.

Of course, even positive stress needs balance. Without adequate recovery, eustress can gradually become distress.

The goal is not to eliminate stress completely. It is to develop the flexibility and resilience to respond to life's challenges in a healthy way.

As a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist I help people better understand their stress responses, reduce unhelpful stress patterns, and build the psychological skills needed to thrive under pressure.
