What is the point of a postpartum doula?

Peace of mind that comes from having a person who truly listens and tunes into your and your baby's needs.

My role is both being a comfort and a helper.

We weren't built to do this alone or steeped in the weight of judgment of others.

💦 water water water 💦

Water in labor is a magnificent tool.

Some clients tell me the #1 thing I recommended they take was the straw water bottle for the hospital.

During labor and for the rest of the hospital stay, having a straw water bottle makes staying hydrated easy!

And during labor, your partner can offer water to you so you expend as little energy as possible between contractions! 🌊🪴

🐥✨ What was the most "real" part of having a newborn at home for you?

Clients of mine often mention the sleep changes and breastfeeding challenges are the most shocking to the system.

Bringing home a newborn can also bring cultural differences to the surface if you are in a country that isn't your home country and/or if you have a partner from another culture.

Postpartum doulas can help smooth the transition.

Sometimes the doula work is in the quiet, calm moments of doing what looks like nothing but is actually everything.

Today I said goodbye to one birth client at our postpartum visit and accompanied another birth client virtually during her labor. Most of the work of accompanying is just the act of being there.

Thank you to those who have placed trust in me to accompany you in any way on your journey. I feel deep in my bones that this kind of support is key and I'm humbled to be a part of your life for as long as you invite me into it. ❤️✨

Something a lot of pregnant people and their partners think is - if there is a public system, aren't all hospitals the same in their maternity protocol?

Surprisingly, the answer is no! Different hospitals may have varying protocol and asking questions about your hospital's protocol can help you decide if it's the right hospital for you.

Here in Madrid there is free choice of providers and this applies to where you give birth.

For example, many British clients I've had have focused more on finding hospitals that offer nitrous oxide as an option since this is so common in the UK. Here it's rare to find, but some public hospitals do offer it!

If there's something from your home country you expected to have (in my case that was having multiple support people, it never occurred to me in a million years I would be limited to one support person!) ask your provider what's available where you are and ask around to find more information about other hospitals in Madrid. What you're looking for may be accessible through the public system!
