The food system is broken. Keep your wits about you when it comes to buying and consuming citrus fruits. Unless they are organic, the peel/rind is treated with synthetic fungicides and waxes applied to prevent mould and extend shelf-life. These are highly toxic for humans.
Lidl is getting press for putting “peel unfit for consumption” (albeit in small font) on their labels, but they are actually doing a better job than all the other supermarkets.
I went into Sainsbury’s today to compare the products and they actually use one extra chemical on their limes - Imazalil. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies this one as a potential human carcinogen. Chronic or high exposure can cause liver damage and disrupt biochemical pathways.
Standard washing, boiling water and bicarbonate soda are not the answers for removing these chemicals (they might help a bit, but not enough). And the flesh might be much less affected, but it’s so important that we’re not having lemon and lime in our drinks, consuming non-organic marmalade, cooking and baking with zest that’s no organic and unwaxed. Most of all, I can’t stop thinking of all the kids who eat clementines every day and get all the chemicals over their hands while peeling. Based on most kids handwashing skills, those chemicals could be hanging around for hours.
Thanks to for highlighting this and thanks to for selling amazing organic citrus fruit.
Are you already eating organic citrus or was this news for you?
