I am a Senior Research Associate at City University, London where I am evaluating the impact of personal resilience training for Bankers and NHS workers. I am also directing an international study of teachers' well-being and work recovery.

This week’s Friday Towards Move is taking me outside of my comfort zone.

I’m heading to a big Tech Conference in Sevilla.

If I’m honest, this one comes with a mix of excitement and nerves. It’s not my usual environment, and there will be plenty of opportunities to strike up conversations, introduce myself, and talk about what I do.

So why go?

Because this move is in service of connection — with a healthy side order of courage.

Connection with new people. New ideas. New possibilities.

And courage… because showing up in unfamiliar spaces, starting conversations, and being visible doesn’t always come naturally. But those are often the moments that matter most.

I won’t be doing it alone, either — I’ll be there with a local friend who is a Talent Management & Systems expert (and fellow expat), which makes stepping into this a little more grounded and a lot more human.

Small move. Real stretch.

That’s the spirit of the Friday Towards Move Club.

Friday Towards Move Club – 13 March 2026

My small move this week is to cycle at least 2km. 🚲

Not far. Not fast.
Just enough to get moving.

This move takes me towards health, connection and freedom — and towards getting outside and using my body (and my bike) a little more.

That’s the spirit of the Friday Towards Move Club:
small, meaningful actions in the direction of what matters.

A thought from my latest People Soup conversation with Miranda Birch:

Listening is becoming a rare workplace skill.

Not because people don’t care.

But because we’re distracted.

Phones.
Notifications.
Meetings where we’re already thinking about the next meeting.

Miranda spent years as a BBC journalist interviewing people from all sorts of worlds. One thing she noticed:

When people feel truly listened to, they often discover new insights about their own story.

It’s something I see in coaching too.

When we slow down and create space in a conversation, people think more clearly, connect ideas and sometimes surprise themselves.

Friday Towards Move Club – Week 2

Each Friday, I name one small action that moves me towards something that matters.

Not a grand plan.
Just a meaningful move.

My Friday Towards Move this week:
Tidying my desk.

Why it matters:
Order, clarity and peace are values I care about — and right now my desk is… not reflecting those very well.

It’s amazing how quickly things pile up.

So today’s small move is simply to clear it, reset it, and create a little more breathing space.

It’s the first Friday Towards Move Club.

A small People Soup ritual.

Each Friday, we name one small action that moves us towards something that matters.

Not a grand goal.
Not a productivity push.
Just one meaningful move.

Here’s mine for today:

My Friday Towards Move:
I’m contacting someone I chatted with at a recent conference to suggest a proper conversational catch-up.

Why it matters:
Connection is one of my core values — and I don’t want good conversations to evaporate into busyness.

It would be easy not to do it.
To assume they’re too busy.
To tell myself “I’ll do it next week.”

But small moves build the kind of life (and work) we actually want.

The latest guest on People Soup is Yass Rad - who is the founder of We Were Unpublished, a part-time consultant at Affinity Health at Work and a part-time PhD student at City St George’s, University of London where she is researching perfectionism in the workplace as well as ACT interventions for wellbeing in organisations.

You'll hear about Yass' creative side, which faded as she entered the world of work, the roots of her return to study (including her research topics), and her personal values which have been a powerful guide.
