Continuing on with men’s mental health awareness, today’s an interesting one.
Have you ever noticed how easily “How are you?” is said ?
It rolls off the tongue like jelly going down a hill without a second thought.
We say it in passing. We say it out of habit. We say it while we are already half thinking about the next thing. We say it without pause.
Most of the time, the answer comes back just as easily.
✅ “Yeah, ok thanks and you ?”
✅“Fine.”
✅“Not too bad.”
✅“All good.”
Simple. Quick. Easy. Conversation ticked off and we continue with our day.
In fact, it might just be one of the most frequently asked questions and one of the least honestly answered.
But for a lot of men (and people) that very question, whilst said with good intention, does not always open a door.
Sometimes (often) it closes one.
Because “How are you?” has become one of those questions people know how to answer without actually saying anything real.
Not because they do not want to talk, or because they do not care but because we have made it so easy to respond on autopilot.
So maybe for Men’s Mental Health Awareness, the point is not just to ask more questions.
And it’s not just this month neither is it just men.
Maybe it is to ask better ones.
❓“What stuff has been on your mind lately ?”
❓“How’s life feeling at the moment ?”
❓“What’s been harder than you’ve let on ?”
❓“You really alright, or just saying you are?”
❓“What’s been taking up too much space in your head recently ?”
Because sometimes people are willing to talk and they just need to feel like someone is asking in a way that actually makes space and time and “be there-ness” for the truth.
And maybe that is where better conversations begin.
Not in asking “How are you?” louder or more often, but in asking with more care, more intention, and more willingness to really listen to the answer.
So maybe next time, instead of “How are you?”, try asking like you actually want the plot, not just the trailer.
On that note, if you feel like sharing in a safe place and want to get it all off your chest, come along and join Our Space To Talk where you can do just that.
🥑 My question to you all today is - What’s up guac ?
