What if the search for alien life is nothing like anything you've seen in a film? 👽🔭
No dramatic signals. No close encounters. Just decades of patient, rigorous science — and a silence that raises more questions than answers.
PBS Space Time has made one of the best explainers I've come across on how this search actually works. Link in bio.

Will AI take our jobs?
Honestly, I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Not just as a professional, but as someone who writes, communicates science, and tries to do meaningful work every day.
Cal Newport — author of Deep Work and one of the most grounded voices on productivity — published a piece this week that cuts through the noise. His conclusion: AI is not hollowing out the workforce the way we feared. What is actually happening is stranger and more interesting. Knowledge work is being reshaped around what he calls "freestyle work" — the kind of thinking that is contextual, creative, and deeply human.
For those of us in specialised fields — radiation protection, scientific communication, technical writing — this resonates. The skills that took years to build are precisely the ones hardest to automate. Critical judgement. Domain expertise. The ability to make complex science meaningful to real people.
I use AI tools every single day. They handle the mechanical. That frees me to focus on the work that actually matters.
Newport's full article is linked in my profile. Recommended Friday reading.

ITER is not the destination. It is the proof of concept.
Right now, thousands of scientists and engineers are working on the most ambitious energy project in human history — demonstrating that fusion, the process that powers the Sun, can work at scale here on Earth.
But what happens when ITER succeeds?
The next step is DEMO — a demonstration power plant that will take fusion from scientific proof to actual electricity generation. After DEMO, the goal is a fleet of commercial fusion power plants. A clean, virtually limitless energy source, with no carbon emissions and far less radioactive waste than conventional nuclear fission.
As a radiation protection professional, I find the road beyond ITER fascinating and challenging in equal measure. Tritium handling, neutron activation, materials degradation under extreme flux — the physics may be nearly solved, but the radiation protection engineering is just getting started.
We are living through a pivotal moment in energy history. Most people do not realise it yet.
The link in my bio takes you to the official ITER roadmap beyond 2035. Worth a read if you want to understand what is actually being built for our energy future.
What do you think is the single biggest challenge standing between ITER and a working commercial fusion power plant?
