RAD-AID Volunteer Sumeer Hussain traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to work with partners on QA at St Paul Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC).

Goals of the trip included an audit check of the treatment planning system (TPS), overall training to the physicists and planners, and support & training for development of the department’s QA program.

I had the privilege of attending a monumental milestone for healthcare in Ethiopia: the official launch of the Liver Transplant Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), dedicated to orchestrating efforts toward establishing the country's first-ever liver transplantation service

While the journey to this point has been long, it has laid a firm and sustainable foundation for a world-class liver transplant program in Ethiopia. The landmark presentations by our MDT members—reflecting extensive advanced training and clinical stays at world-renowned institutions, including CPMC and leading centers in Taiwan—demonstrated an extraordinary level of clinical readiness and expertise.

Building a program of this magnitude requires an entire ecosystem of enabling initiatives. Key foundational pillars already in place include:

⚖️ Unified Legal and Regulatory Framework: The approval of the "Health Service Administration and Regulation Proclamation", officially legalizing and regulating organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ethiopia.

🩸 Systemic Infrastructure: The restructuring and optimization of the Ethiopian Blood & Tissue Bank Service (EBTBS).

🏥 Institutional Legacy and Readiness: Leveraging years of successful kidney transplant experience at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure at the new GI & Transplant Center.

🎓Human Resource Development: ongoing fellowship programs in Hepatobiliary Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Interventional Radiology (IR), alongside upcoming super-specialty programs to ensure long-term workforce sustainability.

🌍 Regional Hub & Medical Tourism Vision: Aligning with the strategic goal to establish SPHMMC and Addis Ababa as a premier hub for medical tourism & specialized care across East Africa.

🏛️ Leadership Commitment: Strong ownership, visionary alignment, & unwavering support across the Ministry of Health (MoH) and SPHMMC leadership.

As our East African Oncology Delegation visit comes to a close, I reflect on an unforgettable journey defined by extraordinary clinical innovation, profound cultural connection, and warm camaraderie.

Here are the major takeaways and lessons from this transformative visit:

✅Hospitality at Its Best: From our host organizations and hospital leadership to local teams, we were welcomed with exceptional warmth, generosity, and open doors at every step.

✅Spiritual & Historical Reflection in Jerusalem: Visiting the sacred holy sites of Jerusalem was a deeply moving experience, offering a profound sense of peace, history, and spiritual connection that enriched our entire journey.�
✅Uncompromising Professionalism & Work Ethic: The dedication of the healthcare professionals, researchers, and administrative leaders we met was truly inspiring, demonstrating a culture of relentless pursuit of excellence in patient care.�
✅Science, Innovation & Research That Tests the Limits: Witnessing cutting-edge research—from point-of-care CAR T-cell manufacturing and Theranostics, Alpha Tau’s revolutionary Alpha DaRT technology, which harnesses the power of alpha particles to destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue, and mobile PET-CT and mobile MRI facilities expanding reach to remote areas, truly demonstrate how research can test the limits of science and medicine. —showcased how science can push the absolute boundaries of nature to save lives.

✅Patriotism, Shared Narratives & Cultural Heritage: A deep love for history, clear national consensus, and pride in heritage are woven into daily life—serving as a powerful foundation for building resilient, world-class institutions.�
✅The Power of Networking & Efficiency: Seeing how multidisciplinary integration, agile emergency workflows, and strategic global partnerships can dramatically lower mortality and redefine healthcare delivery offers invaluable blueprints for our own region.�
Coincidentally, this journey concludes as two ancient calendars align: the Ethiopian New Year 2019 (እንቁጣጣሽ) and the Jewish New Year 5785 (Rosh Hashanah) fall together this September 11!!

Day 5️⃣ marked another major milestone in our journey, focusing on world-class oncology, advanced radiation platforms, and emergency response models at Tel Aviv-Sourasky University Medical Center - Ichilov.

Ichilov demonstrated why it stands as Israel's premier acute care and oncology hub:

✅Precision Radiation Technologies & Pediatric Care: It was fascinating to see MRI simulation in action firsthand from the control room, witnessing real-time soft-tissue visualization for sub-millimeter radiotherapy precision. They also utilize dedicated 100 kV superficial radiotherapy machines to deliver targeted non-surgical treatment for skin malignancies. Beyond tech, their unmatched, child-friendly radiotherapy unit truly stood out—thoughtfully designed with play therapy and creative, colorful spaces to alleviate anxiety and make advanced treatment compassionate for children.�
✅World-Class MDT Trauma Center: Beyond oncology, witnessing Ichilov's dramatic transformation into a world-class, multi-disciplinary "one-stop" trauma center was profound. Direct access via the Arison Helipad for helicopter air ambulances ensures immediate critical transfers—a seamless workflow that has proven to be the main reason for an unprecedented reduction in mortality down to just 3%, serving as a crucial lifeline during ongoing conflicts.�
✅Culinary Experience & Leisure 🍽️🛍️
We gathered over a delicious lunch at Mythos Grill Bar in the Amot Investments Tower, sharing reflections on the clinical workflows and emergency models observed. In the afternoon, we explored the TLV Mall, taking in the vibrant atmosphere of modern Tel Aviv.

Day 5 demonstrated how rapid clinical translation, specialized radiation technology, compassionate pediatric care, and life-saving emergency workflows converge to set global healthcare benchmarks.
