Meteorology & Hydrology Faculty, Arba Minch University The department initially started as department of Meteorology in 2001/2002 in Arba Minch University. It is the only one of its kind in Ethiopia.

Later following curriculum revision, it became Department of Meteorology and Hydrology since 2009/10. The department currently offers one BSc program, Meteorology and Hydrology, and one MSc program, Climate Change and Development. The general objective of the BSc in Meteorology and Hydrology programme is providing a broad knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of Meteorology and

Hydrology and the ability to apply that knowledge and understanding to solve national problems. It targets to produce experts who can conduct investigations to better understand, prevent, or solve water resources problems; Climate monitoring and modeling etc...

It aims to integrate the knowledge of lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere systems to ultimately bring about very successful integrated water resources management. This will offer new advantages and opportunities for very appropriate understanding of the hydrological cycle and proper management of the limited water resource of the country thereby achieving sustainable development in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A sufficient knowledge in climate science and modeling its change and hydrological processes is a basis for sustainable development of a country as an advanced insight into the dynamics of climate and its change would be enormously fundamental for better management of the resulting impacts on various sectors such as water, agriculture, energy, health and construction and for successful scheming of more resilient adaptation policies and strategies. Our MSc program in Climate Change and Development plays a magnificent role in this aspect.

As prepares for another landmark chapter of its Green Legacy Initiative, the country is once again demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and sustainable development. This year's ambitious goal of planting 800 million tree seedlings in a single day reflects Ethiopia's enduring vision of building a greener, more resilient, and prosperous future.

Launched under the leadership of H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, the Green Legacy Initiative has evolved into one of the world's largest community-led environmental restoration campaigns. The initiative goes beyond tree planting by restoring degraded landscapes, conserving biodiversity, improving water resources, strengthening food security, creating green jobs, and enhancing resilience to climate change.

Guided by the inspiring message "Let's Plant Hope" and the slogan "One Seedling, A Thousand Hopes," the initiative highlights the transformative power of collective action in addressing global environmental challenges while fostering national unity and shared responsibility.

The Ethiopian Permanent Mission in Geneva plays an important role in advancing Ethiopia's environmental priorities within the multilateral system. As Ethiopia's representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, the Mission actively promotes the country's commitment to climate action, environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and nature-based solutions.

El Niรฑo is predicted by monitoring conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean and using climate models to estimate how they might evolve over the coming months.

Monitoring relies on a global network of observations, including satellites, ocean buoys, research ships and atmospheric measurements operated by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and international partners. These forecasts draw on observations of sea-surface temperatures, winds, rainfall, air pressure and ocean heat content.

Seasonal forecast models today can predict climate patterns one to six months in advance. One of the main tools used to track ENSO events is the Oceanic Niรฑo Index (ONI) which measures whether sea-surface temperatures in a key area of the equatorial Pacific are warmer or cooler than their long-term average over a three-month period. Warmer-than-average conditions point to El Niรฑo, while cooler-than-average conditions point to La Niรฑa.

In a warming climate, scientists are also looking at the Relative Oceanic Niรฑo Index (RONI). It measures how warm or cool the equatorial Pacific is compared to the rest of the tropics at the same time. This helps separate ENSO conditions from the broader warming of the global ocean.
